"The fastest piece of junk in the galaxy" aka the Millennium Falcon

Recommended Posts

I'D like to try something like this ......so many different kits out there..different genres..

and the like. Well cool, I'll be following. I've just kind of screwed up a kit I've been working

on....but I'll fix it..an ugly seem..that's all. But enough of my problems, and proceed.

It's been a busy week and I haven't had much time at the bench until last night.

I finished up the maintenance wells and added all the small details to them.

I then added the sidewalls to the mandibles.

These were then assembled.

Possibly the biggest challenge painting in sub-assemblies is making sure the paint job looks uniform across the model. They look to be a decent match to me.

Hopefully more progress  this weekend.

Thanks guys. It's been relaxing just sticking stuff together and knowing it'll fit.

Small update for the moment. The kit has a representation of the corridor at the top of the ramp. I used cream white and a brown wash to reflect the lived in look the interior had.

All you'll really see of it at the top of the ramp.

Thanks guys!

For a kit that doesn't have any fit issues, it's really taking its time going together. It's the paint work that's doing it. Plus I've never done pre-shading on such a large scale. Here's the most recent pile of sprues. This isn't even half the sprues in the kit.

The next step was to assemble the engine nozzles.

I used a brown for the pre-shading on these parts to give a different finish to them. Not sure it worked out but it was worth a shot.

Installed into the lower hull:

As the kit I have is the original full option release, it has a lighting kit in it. For the engines, Bandai includes a diffuser assembly.

It's a frosted plastic bit that goes behind the engine nozzles.

Peter, there's something like 36 sprues and about 650-700 parts in the kit. I have another 1/72 Falcon kit made by Fine Molds which is closer to 900 parts. It's an older kit and they had to use that many parts to attain a similar level of detail. It's also a different version of the Falcon as they had to change it between filming Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back.

I haven't had much time at the bench. Work has been crazy busy once the owner announced she's closing the store.

The paintwork is taking all my time up but I think once I get to assembly things will speed up.

Anyways, I managed to get the lower rear hull painted and most of the upper hull.

The lower hull:

The upper hull:

I also got one of the lower bays done.

Hopefully I'll have some more time this week.

Closing the store??  Awe shit man...   that sucks.  Are you transferring to another place?

But your paintwork is lovely.

She's closing the retail store but keeping an online one. So we're consolidating locations and the retail side is moving into the production location.  The office manager and myself get to keep our jobs but instead of walking 5 minutes to work, I'll be driving for 15-20 minutes. So not the end of the world.

Just love the way your pre-shading and weathering is looking - just the right touch.

So glad your position after the closing of the retail store isn't going to change and a twenty minute commute isn't that bad at all. Look at the bright spot, you now have time to drink a cup of 'commuters coffee' on the way to work each day. All kidding aside, just glad you still have your position and no other changes to deal with.

One thing I forgot to mention is the new location puts me 5 minutes away from a hobby shop. Not one of the cheapest for kits, but they have a full stock of most paints and supplies.

There's also a great sandwich shop close by for some of the best Italian veal sandwiches in the city.

Wow, the Falcon is really coming along, but I've NEVER seen a kit of that magnitude.  Wow.  I see what you mean on the painting taking so long.  And I hope your paint booth is HUGE.

I'm afraid to open up the Revell 1/72 IX C Sub I have, but I think that has LARGE sprues, not hundreds of parts.

Your paint, and pre-shading work is really effective.  Does the top come off to show the detail work on the inside? Can't wait to see how the lighting system shows up - should be really cool.

I did look at acquiring the kit - Oh my.  I think that is way out of my price range!  So I just get to watch your terrific build from the sideline.

Good to hear you still get to go to work.  Further, yes, but for me that is 'decompression' time.  :thumbsup2: and now your five-minute walk is to the LHS!
