Will run from Jan 1 - July 1, 2023.
I’m not planning on any extensions.  A prize will be awarded to the favorite completed build od my neighbor’s four kids.  In the case of a tie, their Mom will choose the winner. If she can’t figure it out, I’ll figure something else out.
The idea here is fun, guys. Let’s get building, and we’ll have fun.

Happy New Year y’all, I’m going to bed!

Happy New Year GB everyone!

A long, long...  long time ago I saw this kit sitting on the shelves at our local Sears and Roebuck store.  I was 12 or 13, I can't remember which and when I saw it I knew I had to have it.  But money was hard to come by.  There were only so many discarded cans and bottles to find, and there was stiff competition for lawn mowing.  And I only had one of those old fashioned, human powered cylinder bladed mowers while other kids had Briggs and Stratton to help them.  Allowance?  Hah.

Anyway...   it was this one...  Bought used last yearIMG_1684.thumb.JPG.329b50035a92b87e5fd04fab6a57bd8c.JPG

I may still order some stuff for it.   I'd like a bit more crew.

Nice Gary, when I was a kid, I saw it in the Airfix catalog and wanted one. Never happened, but now I will peep into your build. Are you up to skill level 4? :D

CmK has some nice figures, as well as Scale 75,

I'm still not decided about my entry for the GB. What do you think?

My original plan was to build the Schnellboot S-38 from border along with figures from CMK and Scale 75 (not on the pic)

I also have a soft spot for steam punk subjects and would love to build this resin and metal kit of a submarine with copper surface and burnished brass fins.
The plan is to have the sub integrated into a delicate underwater dio, which will be no part of the GB.

I always wanted to test m patience with a 1/350 ship build and there the USS Arizona came to mind. The Eduard limited edition has enough brass and printed parts in it, to hide the shortcomings of the original kit, hopefully. I added a wooden deck and Ion's 3D printed crew members.

Well...   What I think really isn't important.  But I'll answer anyway.  A 1/350 scale warship is a long undertaking if you have brass details to add.  I considered SMS Seydlitz and Graf Spee...   both have HUGE detailing sets in brass.  Steampunk...   not really my thing and looks like a simple kit.  And a schnellboot...   well, I want the later classes to build eventually too.

I'll have to see what I can find from CMK.  I have no familiarity with them.

Well the GB doesn't start on good terms for me. Today, I choose to build the Schnellboot S-38 for the GB and started to cut and glue some plastic, when I noticed, that the complete PE is missing.
I chose S-38 mainly, because with the last heavy rain, some water entered my workshop and soaked the box completely (luckily only this one). I removed everything from the box and now, even after two hours of searching, no PE showed up. I knew where I stored it, but it's gone. Most of the PE parts are substitutes for plastic parts, but others would have to be scratched.

Rob, that sucks……..must be somewhere……..

Yup, I know, I don't loose stuff normally, not even forget where everything is, but sometimes, it seems like hitting a bad streak, where the youngest house problems meet the hobby in a bad way.

Just to continue the flow: I'm in with the venerable (and HUGE) Monogram ProModeler PBY-5A Catalina and some resin bits (new tail, cockpit details).  Going to go with the 'in-flight' option which will be interesting as the kit comes with four crew - two pilots and two waist gunners.

Will be doing some first-time surgery to graft on the new tail.  Seriously considering drilling out the tail to try and lighten it at least a little.

Chris

Good idea for an inflight build and agreed, the solid resin tail is going to really move the cg rearward.

Any ideas on how you plan on doing the inflight display: just on a stand or a vignette or dio. How about the base of the inflight stand being a resin water scene with a downed pilot in a liferaft?

Hey Peter, Not really sure how to display this big beast.  I LOVE the idea of the Cat in the water with a downed pilot in a liferaft paddling up to the Cat.  I'm just not sure I know how to do it!

I was thinking more in line with the Big Cat in flight and the base for the metal rod be finished as a small water scene with a downed pilot in his liferaft waiting to be rescued - just something different. I know it's a lot of extra work, with the other option being a nicely built inflight display stand.

CMK is a Czech company. I BELIEVE it’s the parent company of Special Hobby and several other Czech model companies.  CMK itself is their line of resin AM for theirs and most all other kits out there.  They make EXTREMELY high quality resin.  The resin you get in SH and I believe Fly kits is CMK.

They are a competitor of Eduard.

I think you're right Ernie - there's a close affiliation of CMK and Special Hobby, and I think you can buy SH kits direct from CMK.

I'm using five CMK aftermarket kits for my Special Hobby Buffalo build.  First time using them, but the quality and detail is high.  Similar to the quality I experienced using the Aires set for my Wildcat build.  Pieces can be fragile as with any resin, so check the bags in case any of the parts have pieces broken off.  You also have to sometimes put in some elbow grease to make the parts work, but overall, I've been very pleased with them.  I have their sets for a few of my other 1/48 and 1/72 kits and the quality looks quite nice.

CMK and Special Hobby have a huge presence at all the US IPMS Nationals every year, as does Eduard.  They are all good people to talk with and I believe in their product. The only CMK issue I’ve ever heard of is a fit issue on the photo recon nose for the 1/48 Tamiya P-38.  Apparently one or two guys have been caught unawares and we’re forced to do some creative modifications to make stuff fit.
The other big Czech Company is HPH, and they’re an odd bunch. HPH is an FAA Certified aircraft manufacturer for all types of Civilian and DOD aircraft, and they also produce their own line of high performance sailplanes. As in those slippery European fiberglass wonderplanes that seem to defy gravity.
Their model kit side business is almost a hobby for them, as their big $$$ is made supplying components and sub assemblies to Boeing, Airbus, Bombardier, and Lockheed-Martin, along with Bell and Sikorsky.

CMK/SH and Eduard have also had a HUGE presence at SMW in Telford, England, and agree with Hubert - they are all great folks to talk to.  I've had lots of conversations with those folks and they have been patient and helpful.

I do like the CMK resin (and their strengthened landing gear) and of course the Eduard bits and bobs in addition to their kits.

I'm happy/upset they have re-released their P-39 kits.  Happy they did it, upset my wallet is likely going to take a hit.  Those are some of my favorite kits in 1/48.

I'm pretty sure about 5-6 years ago I took hundreds of pictures of the SR-71 at Udvar-Hazy for the HPH folks.  They were particularly interested in seeing all of the access panels around the aircraft.  Gigabytes of pictures.  Supposedly it is a 2023 release according to various modeling websites...  It would be nearly a meter long in 1/32 scale!!

Yup, great folks and surely helps keep the wallet very thin

Never knew you did photography/research work for HPH on the SR71. Could very well be we are going to have two gorgeous Blackbirds this year. I just may need to find a part time job to buy all the kits I know I want. 😉

Looks like the build thread has been completed hijacked by spammers!! 😥

Wish the inadequate little dickwads would bugger off elsewhere.

+1

It’s actually appearing under one spammer ID, with multiple posts for on-line casino.

Still, annoying as it clutters the « new posts » dashboard. In the meantime, best way is to ignore it completely by not clicking on his posts …
