Hasegawa Fw-190A5... or 6.

Recommended Posts

Hello boys and girls!

I got a great (really great!) deal on this Hasegawa 190.  I'd been wanting one for quite a while, and I didn't want to wait to build it.  The decals are aged with time...  so I'm not certain which scheme I'll give it.  Due to the parts available I can make either version.IMG_2055.thumb.JPG.4893d23d06cfaab9e8b443516d4139a6.JPG

The Nowotny scheme is quite nice, but I tend to gravitate more to the western confrontation.

One of the first things I did was thin the sides of the seat...   then painted and weathered it.  I just used a darker gray wash over the dark gray paint and then painted the cushion.   I also did some sponge chipping which doesn't show at all.   I also ordered some seat belts from BNA.

Likewise, the cockpit tub and IP.

After matte coating the parts, I used Five Second fix to put glass lenses over all of the gauges.

The Hasegawa decals worked well enough though it took a lake of Mr. Mark Softer to get them to to lay down completely.

Back again.

Yesterday the HGW belts got here.  And thank goodness you get two sets.  Because I totally ruined one with clumsiness and bullheadedness.  And since I had today off...   scheduled, not a sickee...  I knew I would get them done.  They took me all morning.

You can see in the last picture that 65% of the detail disappeared when I closed up the fuselage.

  • 1 month later...

Well...   It's been over a month since my last update here.  Now that I'm done with the 'let's get wet' group build, I can get back to this one.

I attached the wings with no gaps on the uppers.

IMG_2200.thumb.JPG.d73799f878a2101b640cff613ea58388.JPG

Unfortunately the flaps and the wing around them is molded for the flaps to hang virtually straight down.  I didn't like that and did as much as possible to get them in with a nice fit.  I looked at a lot of 190 pics, and most don't have the flaps hanging down.

IMG_2199.thumb.JPG.2b0b45d1a48883e4309a2162e314e4b1.JPG

One of my pet peeves in the model aircraft world is when a part is molded to be open, but doesn't fit when you want to do it closed.

Once I assembled to cowling, I discovered that it doesn't fit perfectly.  You can see the ridge around the leading edge fillet as well as the small gap immediately in front of the wheel well.  I didn't want to do reshaping and resizing of the cowl.  To me, it seemed like a recipe for disaster.  So I will make templates with 3m blue tape and then cut the required shaped into some styrene sheet.  Has anyone else had this situation with this kit?

IMG_2194.thumb.JPG.df604bccc6f0eda8114aed452097f833.JPG

I suppose I could have ignored it.  But I hate ledges on aircraft.

Happy modelling!

Nice to see you back at the 190 again, with the GB entry beautifully built.

Absolutely agree o million percent that almost every kit that has parts molded to be open, are a nightmare to build closed. Only time I seem to find the opposite is when the company provided separate parts and instructions for building them both ways and this isn't often to say the least.

Yikes, the cowling is a true nightmare - same on Hasegawa for a bad job here.

Thanks for the likes and comments, everyone.  Always glad to get them.

Small update as I've been pretty busy and my fixes all seem to take longer than expected.

The large fillets I made have been sanded down to a finer thickness.

Also, after learning that the engine was tilted downwards, I glued the plastic pin so that it wouldn't spin, and used two pieces of thread to re-establish where the center should be.   Then , drilled it out and inserted a 2mm piece of copper tube.  Now, we're much closer to the proper thrust line.

IMG_2204.thumb.JPG.a78a8d039bf738a6388b34fe2505c97b.JPG

Finally, I stripped all of Hasegawa's heavy handed surface detail from the control surfaces.

IMG_2206.thumb.JPG.1aa91e0920530bbe1e7fdc32714873f0.JPG

And my leading edge.

IMG_2207.thumb.JPG.f05c9ca582f32d7d9fe3d353c50c0aea.JPG

I wish Hase would have got the interior details correct for the MG 151's.

Has anyone got a good reference picture for where the MG-FF's come out of the leading edge?    I know that the A5 was often flown without the MG-FF's on board.  But I don't know if that meant that the ammo-drum blisters under the wings were replaced by flat panels.

Thanks!

Dunno about refs Gaz ... but this might help?

Nice progress on the fixes and correcting the engine thrust line is a correction I can't recall anyone doing on a build before 🏆

Thank you, Peter.  Just another one of those nasty surprises from an old kit to fix.  I might never had noticed had I not read somebody elses wip.

Thank you for the pics, Martin!  Great ones they are, too.  Now I just have to decided how visible to make the reinforcing rings.  Might do them as decals so that the thickness is uniform.

Yeah...    I wanna do that small detail.  My original question was about the MG-FF apertures which have a much heavier reinforcement...   a la these pics that were given to me at TOS:

Welcome back to another update...

Special thanks to those who provided pics or links.

If you'r building the A5 version, you'll have to fill in the panel lines associated with the outboard MG 151's associated with the A6-8.  I used CA with baking soda dropped in to speed drying.IMG_2217.JPG.e9b39394d303420c81fea6637550d903.JPG

Then I used Evergreen sheet and tube to make the details on the leading edges around the gun barrels.

IMG_2218.thumb.JPG.d3ff522fa2ce46bc04b1ca36d2c08dfd.JPGWorking around that camera opening has been tough.  I don't want to remove the raised detail.

I taped all the way around the reinforcing ring to prevent sanding the edges off while I thinned it.IMG_2220.thumb.JPG.d9d102bd15dc9c89827a181786d57a3b.JPG

Now comes my least favorite time in aircraft modelling...   blemish check.

So, I think I'll be gone for a while...   until I can get all of these marked errors cleaned up.

Some mighty nice progress on you FW190 - the details never escape your eye as the leading edge details look so good.

Can't believe after all these years, I've never used baking soda and CCA - I'll have to pick up a box today and give it a try.

That instrument panel looks amazing!  Great work Gaz.

Are you sure the missus doesn’t have some?  I know a lot of ppl use it for baking and as a deodoriser in the fridge.  A teaspoon will go pretty far…

It will change your modelling life.  No more waiting overnight for putty to dry.  Ready in seconds.  Just ensure you don’t let it sit for too long as CA will get much harder than the surrounding plastic in 8 hours.  Truly, I had all of those blemishes fixed 5 hours after the update.

For really shallow dings, I drill a hole so that the CA is firmly anchored.  It is possible to sand poorly anchored CA right out of the hole.

I don’t really care for it for the dorsal wing/fuselage seam.  The main reason being, that trying to rescribe the seam line is very difficult because the fuselage is in your way.

Even if you have a great chasm to fill…. It can be ready to sand in seconds.
