SapperSix Posted October 21, 2020 Author Posted October 21, 2020 There has been much work now that the winter has returned. It has been feeling good to be back at the bench for a good bit. Lots of things to get done, so much detail. Slow going at this point. The break in time during the build has sent a few small pieces missing. The ejection handles cost me a good bit of time and I still have not really found a good solution. In the end I used painted wire and man that was a real chore. I learned a ton, mostly what not to do... So many little things now...and moving so very slowly... The seats are pretty much done minus detailing, weathering and flatting out the tone. There were many failed experiments. I have never detailed the canopy before. And here we are. 7 2
GazzaS Posted October 21, 2020 Posted October 21, 2020 Amazing looking Phantom, Frank! FWIW, I think it's almost impossible to get perfect in-scale replicas for the ejection handles. If memory serves, the black bands are only 1/2 inch wide on the real thing. ...and your handles look better than most. Keep up the good work! Gaz 6
harv Posted October 21, 2020 Posted October 21, 2020 Frank my friend, excellent work! Looks fantastic !....harv 4
SapperSix Posted October 21, 2020 Author Posted October 21, 2020 I thought that I was a little too "warmed up" last night when posting. However, I am still unable to remove some of the pictures from the post. Odd, It maybe my browser, Firefox, that is mucking up the joint. 5

I think I am past the warm up phase of modeling re-entry, and am feeling like I am close to a groove. As to the handles, at first I was was in to the exact number of rotations and scale. In the end I was happy to get something to kinda work. The next issue is the thin black stripes of the canopy unlock handles. 6

SapperSix Posted November 7, 2020 Author Posted November 7, 2020 Undergoing aft final assembly. I have to sit down and think hard about the next step in weathering. 9

HubertB Posted November 10, 2020 Posted November 10, 2020 Superb ! I’m with Gaz. Your ejection handles look very realistic and a lot better than most (especially mine ) attempts. Hubert 4

I was thinking maybe additional oil stains or the like. Having said that, its time to get this one through the finish line. I cant tell you how many times I have knocked the pitot tube off trying to get in more detail. On 11/9/2020 at 10:56 PM, HubertB said: Superb ! I’m with Gaz. SapperSix Posted February 1, 2021 Author Posted February 1, 2021 Well a few tiny things to fix. But for the most part I am calling it. Just a few photo's before I get a decent photographic set up. This build, and future builds, will warrant upgrading my photography game. I have considered putting "remove before flight" flags on the kit but it will have to be shipped a few thousand miles. That is something else all together. I really want to to re-do the left horizontal stabilizer. I have what I need to do it, leaving the current one in place until the new one is complete. arrgggghhh...we will see. This is the most ambitious effort of my life. And will hopefully be one of many more. With every part I learned a lot about the phantom. Off to get some decent pictures of this plane.... 6 1

GazzaS Posted February 2, 2021 Posted February 2, 2021 I'm glad to see you calling this one done. It's a tremendous efforts, and I love the results. 5

I have to say that shading of the green camouflage has been a contentious argument I endured many times in my head. Trying to envision the schemes after all the shading, washing and what not is sometimes hard for me. I am happy I didn't do anything that warranted a redo. Thanks for stopping by. 3 2

With your capability it would be a great build to see. I too am tempted by most things ZM. I am excited to get a better photographic set up. In some cases the pictures will be around longer than the model. I only have so much space and some of my older kits will have to be retired to storage. This as newer builds mount. I will keep a few key older kits around just as a place marker. Sometimes its nice to see your progress through the years. 4

Thanks Gaz. I didn't realize soooo much time had passed. Then again a lot of life took place during this build. As with many past builds they serve as a marker in time. And sometimes, with many memories attached to it that aren't related to the model at all. It is a giant flag in the dirt as far as my will to push beyond the box. Despite the 100,000,000 million things I see wrong with it, I am so very happy with it. Thank you for your kind words. 4 1
SapperSix Posted February 4, 2021 Author Posted February 4, 2021 The modification of including/creating the canopy deck on this Revell kit, means the crew ladder is not going to be close to a proper fit. Added to the long list of lessons learned...So for now it will be just be a tad short. Luckily, I haven't had that problem too often... The chipping came out ok. 7

Looks quite realistic! I have one left over from one of my Tamiya-Kits. Maybe this fits better! If you want to have it, I may send it to you. 6

I prefer this over other techniques as it adds depth. I very much appreciate your kind offer. I will be happy to pay for any expenses incurred. 4

With painting on it is very difficult to achieve a realistic result. Just give me your address and I will send it to you. 4
