GazzaS
Well Comrades, Despite the short stall with the missiles, work continues on the aircraft. Yesterday it was primed, sanded, and mottled. The so-called black-basing. However I used two shades: Blue-black and blue-brown. Then today they were sanded with 4,000 grit wet micromesh. In my recent experience, I've discovered that a bit of fine abrasive is helpful in color modulation, blending, fading, and of course, smoothness. Current progress: I also experimented with the lighting. Turning it down a few notches made the mottling much easier to see. Thanks for looking! I have around a dozen 109's waiting to be built here as well as about 8 completed. There is nothing to fear. They'll never rule the skies from the Ebro to the Moskva again. GazzaS
Hi everyone! Finally got most of the paint laid down. The main scheme is grays I created to mimic pictures and perhaps my own ideas. The detail colors are either Tamiya or Alclad II. Anyway...pics: Still I have missiles to build, touch up painting, detail painting, coats of Future, and then weathering. Fortunately there are some good photos of active duty machines. Thanks for looking! Gaz
GazzaS
Putting the missiles together. Just let me say... unless you feel like wasting a lot of time... get ya some aftermarket missiles. They're roughly cast, with soft details, square edges on the fins, and the fit of forward to the rear halves is awful. As a bonus, none of the parts are made to click into the perfect place and angle. It's all up to you to ensure that everything sits straight, perpendicular, and parallel.
DocRob
Paint is looking great Gaz Is the angle of the wheel in picture one for real, due to relaxed fit Russian production tolerances maybe, or is it just not glued in place. Cheers Rob

The fascination lays in a design which is about raw power and speed in the smallest possible frame, combined with some Soviet design madness. It's just a huge engine, made able to fly with the addition of some minor things like wings and tails and a tiny cockpit as well. I can remember my jaw dropping as a kid, when I first saw pictures of the beast. This bird's design is the ultimate neglection of fanciness. Martinnfb
Amen to that Rob. Like the darker shade on the nose. Good maintenance

Cheers Rob Thanks Rob! The angle on the wheel... it's a bit of a sore spot. Unlike most models where a cylinder is inserted into a cylindrical shaft, the pegs on this kit are cones... not cylinders. So that means that they only meet on a narrow band. And, I'm ashamed to say that I wasn't able to get the angle I desired on the wheels. Though It looked right when I had it propped to dry, the end result is a bit off. Gaz

Ivan Ivanovich
Gaz, Have you already painted the radome? I just spotted a thing... It seems like the black of the upper nose anti-glare finish and the fuselage colour stop right aft of the radome mounting frame of the radome subassembly. The dark grey radome coating was only applied to the dielectric portion of the radome subassembly. Upper anti-glare finish and fuselage camo colour should also comprise the radome mounting frame. Unless it's too late for any corrections, it's only a few minutes of extra work to fix it.
