I had this display unit built especially for my 48th Lancasters (second one is under construction), and measures approx. 5ft across the front, is 30" deep and the height is 18".

Its fits nicely into the bay window at the front of the house because I never was going to purchase a suite with a second chair . . .:sofa:

Individually designed by me and crafted by a local cabinet maker and costing around £300.

I am well pleased with it B)

Thats a good idea, I like it.

I have seen those display coffee table units, but would never get the wife on board.

I’ve seen this Ikea cabinet with side removed / not fitted to make a large plan format case.....

I'm going to be making a custom base and top and joining two of those together. Along with adding four extra shelves to it, that will increase my display space considerably.

Your wife brings you coffee?

If my wife brought me coffee, I wouldn't know what to do with it as I can't stand the stuff. She constantly says she can't figure how we got together since that's almost all she drinks. Or at least it seems that way to me.

Now when she brings me a beer, that's a different story entirely.

I have the same plan. I was even going to look into if it might be possible to connect four into a larger square but that may be pushing it.

The problem with a square is the centre will still have supports in it. There's be no way around that so it would effectively be two  sections that are two wide.

That is the aspect I have to investigate. If I am unable to somehow remove it without affecting the integrity of the case, I was hoping to minimize it enough to stagger kits around it.

You guys are lucky. I still have the same issue. Yes, call it the B-36 conundrum. Too big of aircraft, too small hangar space.

I have dominion over the downstairs area with the family room and spare bedrooms plus my office. My wife has never said anything about my stash, and all she says about my built stuff is 'Why don't you show them to me when you're done?"

Because she's too busy watching America's Got Talent and other dullness.

I guess it's time to drag this one up from the depths. I've started on my Ikea Detolf shelf mod project and wanted to know if I should it post it here or possibly as a WIP thread?

Don't forget too you have potentially hidden space in walls, By recessing the cab into the wall it wont look as menacing!

I had an idea to turn a spare bedroom closet into a space to insert one such cabinet.

If it's for that B-36, maybe not just recess, but more of a serving hatch.. with a cabinet both sides. Ps that suggestion may be upsetting to some.

Also I have built a trestle table that has a 34" wide glass top and width of up to 72".  then another section of glass, somewhat narrower in my case fits underneath. the tittle table has 4 adjustable posts that loft the too glass, for me its only 6" but I could go to 12 making it a higher table.. but the glass
keeps everything on show, that is until more models get piled on the top. The downside is that custom cut reinforced glass is both heavy and expensive.

So;

You make the cabinet. Lots of ways to do this.$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

They make the cabinet. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

You buy a readily available cabinet.$$$

You procure a used cabinet and make it new again. I did this, searching social media sites and business supply warehose'. In the end 3 out my four came from mall offices , which may have a storehouse of left behind business furniture etc. The mall manager was quite happy to gain the space back for better things.$$

Is this the simple mod to double the number of shelves, or the combining of two cabinets into one? Or something I've not heard of yet?

Expand

The plan is to do both. I've got the wire anchors and acrylic sheet for the extra shelves and I've just started on the new base and top to combine two units.
