Watched a guy hook up a city bus. That's about it. He was great enough to walk me through the steps he had to do including pulling the shaft out of the rear axle so the diff would freewheel.

Yeah, if you don't pull the drive shaft, and pull it from the front, it will burn the transmission bearings out due to no lubrication,,,,  tow it from the back ad all is ok... but some of those wrecks........................ well.................. that is why some of them end up on a low bed.....

No front brakes..........really for such a beast. Is it due to the heavy loads they pulled or what's the reason for the absence???? Question from an Belgian noob.:hsmack:

They done it for safety. There was no ABS back then if you had to stop all a sudden with front brakes you would lose your steering and couldn’t control the truck some people ordered there trucks with no front brakes or there was a air switch on the dashboard if you had front brakes you could cut the air off to them in slick road conditions it read “Slippery or “Dry”

Yes, the "Front Brake Limiting Valve", and here in B.C. God help you if you had it in the 'WET' position on dry roads and D.O.T. stopped you !  Yes, cold shower time Danny !!!!   I LOVE old Iron !

Did some work today regarding engine detailing. The other side............ Same deal, some pipes and wiring

The brass tubes will guide the bolts used to tighten the exhaust to the cylinder block.

I got the chance to learn how to overtake road trains out in the Pilberra Western Australia. A CB is essential, you call quoting the Road train ID plate# as you approach from behind. it's not the license plate, but the company plate like this one, JT31 ( # also behind the stack on the cab) , adding yourself as "LV light vehicle, requesting to overtake". These drivers are amazingly careful and helpful, making sure no oncoming before giving you the go-ahead. It does takes quite a time to pass 4 trailers. The road dust, especially after rain, also makes some impressive paintwork additions to when you get to hand back the rental ute.

Mack still makes a Super Liner? VERY cool............... also a question from a Canadian Truck driver, I notice in Oz, very few if any tractors have rectangle headlights.... looks strange to me to see new Western Stars or KW's with round head lights, where as up here most everything now has rectangle lights.............. state laws? Is there a reason for that?

OK, I guess that makes sense.... I am just now so used to seeing the rectangular lights, I was wondering if the rectangular light casted a sharper beam or the other way around.... never gave it a lot of thought till just now...

Ah, this brings back memories. As a kid in the mid to late 70s I was totally into big rigs, I was in my glory when the BJ and The Bear show came out. For some reason Movin' On never hooked my interested. It starred Claude Akins and some other dude who drove around in a green conventional Kenworth doing stuff I guess. Kenworths were/are my favorites. I got the Monogram model of the Movin On truck for Christmas or a birthday. I remember the decals were all but transparent and didn't even ALMOST show up against the green I painted it and the hood fit horribly. It didn't meet up with the cab which i realize now, was because of the big thick hinges they give you, but my 9-10 year old brain just couldn't figure out. I had a Monogram Mack that had the same problem.

Keep the build pics coming, I'm thoroughly enjoying this, and I'm getting the itch.

 

*Edit* I think the kits were AMT kits not Mongram now that I think of it

Mack still make 5 conventional Trucks here, the Superliner's go mostly to private operators doing long hauls with B-double or A/B combo trailers. Same drivetrain goes into the Titan (the one in Iain's phot above) that specialise in the triple and quad trailer Outback Road trains. Tridents also do long hauls, but go mainly to the major haulage companies. Under this is the Metroliner and the Granite, usually only seen with day cabs and for pulling Dog trailers and cement mixer work.

Lights tend to be round, but within an aero type housing. Every little bit helps to save fuel. New Metroliner front end...

And for Danny... The same Metroliner day cab, notice how bare the basic chassis is, without the fifth wheel or a body on the back. This will probably become a Tipper, possibly in combination with a steerable Dog trailer.
