The Absurdity of it All. Huge airplane models.
GazzaS replied to Clunkmeister's topic in Modelling Discussion
I'm finding my 1/48 MiG-25 a bit ungainly to manage. It's not really the size, it's all of the little bits that stick out here and there that I've had to replace once or twice since beginning. I think there comes a point where a kit needs to have a pipe on a swivel mounting shoved up it's tailpipes to keep your hands from touching delicate-pointy things. Gaz -

Still too fat. Besides... 109's belong out in the light letting their beauty shine! -
Turn out the lights! The party's over!

Paper models... that's just one place I don't want to go. -

Despite the absurdity... I would jump on a 1/32 scale Tu-95 (or B-58) quicker than you could down a shot of Jack, Ern! C'mon... It's self-explanatory... Gaz -

Thank you! I have around a dozen 109's waiting to be built here as well as about 8 completed. There is nothing to fear. They'll never rule the skies from the Ebro to the Moskva again. Gaz

Looks good. It's never the number of parts that bothers me. It's ambiguity in the directions (Where does this go, exactly?) or fit issues. Gaz -
Thank you, Sir! I know... I know... you "work for a living!" Heh... I never thought of it that way. But If I'm to look at porn, I think it might be a bit hotter. Hah! Fantastic! Thank you, Sir! Heh... Güt Fahrt! That's ok, Ivan... I have enough 109 love for the both of us! Gaz

Well Comrades, Despite the short stall with the missiles, work continues on the aircraft. Yesterday it was primed, sanded, and mottled. The so-called black-basing. However I used two shades: Blue-black and blue-brown. Then today they were sanded with 4,000 grit wet micromesh. In my recent experience, I've discovered that a bit of fine abrasive is helpful in color modulation, blending, fading, and of course, smoothness. Current progress: I also experimented with the lighting. Turning it down a few notches made the mottling much easier to see. Thanks for looking! Gaz

Thanks for the clear up, Martin. One thing about this model is inconsistency. The rudders ailerons, and flaps, trailing edges, and stabilators are delicately thin with very fine taper and edges. Yet the missiles could have fins made of LEGO. And the cylindrical parts have a rough exterior as if Russian missiles were made of cast iron. Pretty inexplicable. Gaz

Guys, Thank you for the info! I don't know why these things don't show up when I'm searching for them. Four rails and only two missiles??? Surely you jest! There are also a pair of Sidewinder copies and a two missile adapter for each wing. What about that outfit? I might have to do all four anyway...looks more menacing that way... even if it's techically wrong. Gaz

HI Everyone, As my MiG gets nearer to completion, I'm finding it difficult to find good images of Soviet Air to Air missiles. Especially the big boys carried on the MiG-25. Anyone got any useful images/nomenclature? Thanks for your thoughts! Gaz

Jeff, I didn't know that it was near me until 5 weeks ago. It was only 25 minutes drive. When I lived in the US, the only military gear I got to climb on was the Sherman tank outside the Grayling Michigan VFW Hall. Gaz

Kev, If you're over 5'8" you'd find it hard going. At 6'3" there was no place I could stand up, and the driver's compartment was totally too small for me. Gaz

Hi everyone, Today my club had our monthly meeting at Tankride in beautiful Tamborine Queensland. They have quite a few runners including Centurion Tanks, armored cars, and APCs as well as some great display stuff like a BMW with a sidecar. But I only took a few pictures. I got somebody to take one of me so that you all won't think I look like Dr. Strangelove: This tank was damaged in combat in Vietnam and deemed not repairable. So, they took of the remains of the upper bits and turned it into a training vehicle.

Thank you, Martin! If I only had the will to copy all of that detail that isn't on the model. An d if only ICM hadn't worked so hard to screw some things up. Still... It's a plane I've always wanted to model. Gaz
