Completely agree that masking with 'worms' is a lot harder then meets the eye.

A few years back, I enjoyed building this 1/48th scale Kfir and spent a lot more time then I ever thought masking with blue tack. I discovered the key for me was to make the worms as thin as practical and consistency in thickness. Applying them was another story as the thinner I made them, the more they wanted to stretch.

I do have a question regarding the Kfir - what what are the stripes for on the inner leading edges?

Peter,

found out what the white stripes were used for:

Info came from Yoav Efrati: The white stripes made it easier to spot raised fastener heads. These stripes were also found along the wing roots.

Quite an unusual method but seems to have solved a problem…

Looks perfect now, fixing the overspray payed off. Bring on the black and yellow, please.

Thanks for your feedback Rob!
I‘m happy now that I can move to the triangles and other small jobs.

Here’s the next painting update.

Masked the plane (I have no extraction unit for airbrushing) completely:

and sprayed the black part of the triangles:

I also airbrushed the subsonic tanks with Alclad II polished aluminum and white aluminum:

So only small progress today.
Tomorrow I will airbrush the yellow part of the triangles.

Black outlines of the wing triangles look smooth and by tomorrow, they should be ready for the insert yellow/orange color.

Nice work on the NMF tanks .. looking mighty good.

I'm hoping when you said:"(I have no extraction unit for airbrushing) ... doesn't this mean you are not using a paint/spray booth? Back in the day who knew how harmful the chemicals in the paints were and I started using one now for a good ten year, as it's a must plus I wear a good respirator.

Thank you for the feedback!

Peter and Gary,
I have a (self constructed) spray booth but no extraction unit.

Therefore I use a professional mask when airbrushing:

But a real spray booth is on my wishlist for Christmas…

Nice work on the masking Kai.
I use a good mask too, when spraying and try to have a constant airstream in the room when doing so. After spraying lacquers, I leave the workshop for some minutes, when possible.
I have a spray booth, but it proved to be to small for 1/32 planes, so I improved it, by adding a transparent plastic container, which is Duct-taped to the suction module. The transparent container was cut to fit and allows to worm some LED strips around for better lighting. It's not the best unit, money can buy, but it works for me.

You see the problem :D

Planning phase with the same kit.

P1130943.thumb.JPG.0a46ee184fb51ecd49d1687bed5a5e5c.JPG

Done (Not the TA-152 :D)

P1130945.thumb.JPG.fba925faac560619b934043c781f53de.JPG

Lastly, I moved the LED strips to the outside. Cleaning the box is much easier this way.

Thanks for your tipps Rob! I think I will copy this! Looking really very good! And lots of light which is essential for modeling and airbrushing.

The black-yellow triangles are finished.

First I sprayed the surfaces which would become yellow with a white basecoat:

The the yellow was airbrushed in several layers with 12.000 grid polishing in between the coats:

Finally I removed the masks. In 2 places surgery is necessary because the paint peeled off. But nothing critical to correct:

After the surgery I have to paint some grey panels on the fin and then the camouflage is finished.

Holy Smokes the triangles came out absolutely perfect - what a paint job for sure. Can't believe the paint peeled in two place and even though you have it easily under control, just seems the Mirage is fighting you to be end.

Thank you Peter,

you are right. But this was my fault when cleaning the surface for the primer. Nothing Italeri can be blamed for ;)… But I will win the fight (at least that’s my goal)…:D
