Martinnfb
The plan is to build Mosquito almost out of the box, however I would like to address few glaring problems, namely the bloated shape of the front section, including the windows, the leading edge above the radiators and few minor details as I go. The final result should look like this RCAF DH 98. B Mk.25, based in Greenwood Nova Scotia within the 8th. OTU. Serial KB380. B.Mk.25 was upgraded B Mk.XX, which was Canadian version of B Mk.IV. The main visual differences were paddle blade props and uncuffed exhaust stacks. If Mosquitos gurus can help with some detail drawings I would be ever so grateful. Let's began with the picture of the box,,,,, nah just kidding. Let's began with looking at pictures that matters
Martinnfb
I have been working on this for a few evenings already, rushing through as I suppose to have an eye surgery tomorrow . That was cancelled , so now, I can just slow down and give you quick run down of my glue-slapping progress. Sick slide-mold technology Working on the re-shaping the nose contours, never mind the window that is badly shaped and placed New clear part is oversized to accommodate for the filling and blending of the connecting perimeter Shaping in Lots of resin help to secure it in place. Here you can see the dull hammer-head shape of the leading edge. I decided to cut it, bend it and re-shape it. support blocks from underneath won't be visible. Finalized shape of the nose, much better. Could be better , but I ran out of thickness New angle of the leading edge. More polishing... Top parts are sanded to submission.
Martinnfb
Last night was the landing gear night. Assembly is straightforward except for one mistake in instructions. Part F2 should be part F3. again I rushed , but it’s all in there and the fit was pretty good. Eduard resin wheels are an absolute must here. I pre-painted the parts prior to the assembly, just to cheat my way out of it.

Martinnfb
This. The last cylinder was piggybacking on the forward one joined in one exhaust stack. So we have a first casualty Just like here. Only 5 stacks, instead of six like the two-stage Merlins
Martinnfb
On a positive note, that will give me time to thin out the inner walls of cowling openings. Boom ! Actually, no . There was an inner flange/shroud. How much was that Tamiya anyway ?

Thank You Paul, it is just a Lasic surgery, but I have been coughing for a while now, so that has to be addressed first. Gonna gurgle on some radioactive Barium on Wednesday and life is good.

BlrwestSiR
Crap! I just checked and have 3 sets of Eduard unshrouded exhausts. I could have sent one with the props.
HubertB
Good work on correcting the botched shape of the wing LE. I know there is a limit to what can be done, but I am sure you have noticed the leading edge shape is wrong outside of the nacelle as well …. The position of the windows look so dreadfully wrong, didn’t anyone measure a real plane. Maybe there isn’t one?

Tamiya offers only the version bastardising the look of the Mossie with a guns-nose and a flat windscreen canopy … I have the HK kit, but the shape errors have pushed it to the bottom of the stash. The more I think of it, the more I wonder if the solution is not to graft the Revell nose to the Tamiya kit … Hubert

I still have my stalled HK BOAC kite sitting on the SOD. Martin’s fearless, so let’s see what happens… 4 1
Peterpools
Martin First and foremost, good luck with your eye surgery - nothing more important. I just had major oral surgery last Saturday and have been mostly sidelined from building as I can't wear my mask yet and that means no painting. I now have two projects underway but pretty much stuck in the mud - maybe today I'll be able to wear the mask without too much pain and carry on but for me, health issues these days are at the top of the list. Following your progress with all the corrections and work you have done so far, I tip my hat to you, some brilliant modification and correction work. After seeing what you have gone through up to this point, I'm so glad I bought and built the Tamiya Mossie when it first came out and if the erg ever rises again, I wouldn't hesitate on buying another one.
Administrators Clunkmeister Posted February 15, 2023 Administrators Share Posted February 15, 2023 My only question is: will it end like this? 1

Peterpools
Ernie Fearless is only part of the equation - the other half, some absolutely brilliant modeling skills to pull off all the corrections. If we ever had a Mossie GB, I would be in with both feet with the Tamiya kit.
Martinnfb
Thank you for your support guys, appreciate that. Carl , thank you for the thought, I already ordered the resin exhaust on evilbuy Thank you Phill , yes there are some Mossies around. In matter of fact there's one being restored just 30minutes from Calgary. Will investigate asap. Thank you Hubert, yes I was looking at the rest of the leading edge and the plan is to ill it with epoxy and sand the hell out of it. If you see any more glaring discrepancies please chime in. I also noticed the strange looking canopy, but decided to leave it as is. Thanks Ernie, that is the plan. This kit is not all that bad, there is definitely a potential. I know Tamiya created absolute marvel, but for bomber of two stage merlin versions are only HKM kit available. Thank You Peter, always nice to have you around. I will try to make it presentable. Maybe my build can help to someone else with inspiration and ideas. Having said that Revell kit is not an option either, in matter of fact it would be a step back, I tried that path years ago. I could consider kit-bashing Tamiya, but that elevates the price tag rapidly. Needless to say, that I paid only $100 for this kit. So, let do it and see if it was worth it. And again guys, I know nothing about Mosquitos and this is a big learning experience for me. Any help and input will be highly appreciated. Be critical and bold. You won't hurt my feelings Cheers Martin
Martinnfb
A bit of work on the rest of the leading edge. Unmodified modified
HubertB
The Falcon vac canopies and nose, made for the Revell kit, look « less awkward » than the kit’s parts, and are not that expensive… But that means making the bomber nose aperture smaller, IIRC. The kit’s main canopy frame fits in the Falcon vac canopy, btw. Hubert
GusMac
Great work Martin, especially the nose window fix. The new ones look really nice once polished up.
