BlrwestSiR
Onto the cockpit, I finished that up finally. I added the missing handles to the IPs Then I finally closed up the fuselage. Getting closer.
BlrwestSiR
Test fitting the forward fuselage to the rear half, I noticed a gap on one side along the shoulder. I used a spreader bar to expand the forward fuselage slightly and that did the trick.
ScottsGT
Hey Carl, I just noticed a major boo-boo on the HAD Models decal sheet. The bottom fin decals are both for the left side! When time comes, I’m going to make an attempt to cut one corner out, flip it around and then add the straights for the right side. 1
BlrwestSiR
Scott, I hadn't noticed that. Thanks for pointing it out. I might just try painting it instead.
BlrwestSiR
Just checked the decal sheet and Scott is correct, there's two of the right side ventral tail stripe. Guess I'll be painting them on.
BlrwestSiR
Time for an update. I've been mostly assembling and painting several smaller bits of the Tomcat. I got the vertical tailplanes painted. The nose cone was attached and the seam cleaned up. Lastly, I sanded out the canopy seam and polished it up. And the cockpit is all done.
DocRob
Nice progress with the big cat, Carl. It seems, your up and making it to the deadline with your actual speed. I like the 'spreader' idea and keep it stored on my brain-HD. Cheers Rob 2
BlrwestSiR
Thanks Rob! I've used spreader bars on other builds. They can really help reduce or eliminate fillers later on.
BlrwestSiR
More progress this morning. Mostly, it's painting bits and bobs in white. I did get the ventral fin stripes done in yellow. Now to mask them off for the black.
ScottsGT
I just picked up something new watching the dogfight scene yet once again. The walkway on top of the intake is only on the left side, not both sides like a lot of decals have. I’m sitting here looking at Tamiya decals and they are black. Got a Revell set that is yellow. Movie appears to be a medium gray. 4
GusMac
The walkway decals on the newer 1/48 Tamiya kit are a medium/dark grey. 3
BlrwestSiR
Left side makes sense as the boarding ladder is on that side. I'll probably just mask and paint the walkways. They're just squares so shouldnt be too hard. * * Famous last words. Edited July 8, 2023 by BlrwestSiR Fix typo 3
BlrwestSiR
The ventral fins are painted. Thanks to Scott for the heads up on the decal issue. Made it easier to do them now reather than when attached to the fuselage. Speaking of the fuselage, I did a quick test fit together. I started work on the canopy. Masking the clear bits and slowly gluing the frame on. A coat of black.
DocRob
Looking great Carl, but will it be finished in time? Are you going 24h for the rest? Cheers Rob 3
BlrwestSiR
Thanks Rob. I think it'll be close. We'll see how much I can get done over the next couple days.

BlrwestSiR
Still plugging away. Missiles are painted. Gear has had Hasegawa Mirror Finish applied to the oleos. Fuselage is coming together as well. Forced perspective might be throwing the proportions off a bit. 1
BlrwestSiR
Oh yeah, gear doors are painted.
Peterpools
Carl Amazing work and progress on your Big Cat. Keep plugging away, you're going to cross the line in the nick of time.
BlrwestSiR
Thanks Peter. Looks like I'm going to just miss the cutoff. That's ok as I finally got this build off my bucket list. Here's more progress. Here's the nose section masked and painted. There's some touch-ups needed but those will wait until I've joined the two fuselage sections.

BlrwestSiR
One thing I've always hated on Navy aircraft is the red outline on the landing gear bay doors. Then I tried a red Gundam marker and now it's easy peasy. 2

BlrwestSiR
Fuselage is now one piece. Once dry I'll fill the join and do touch up paint work.
