For my Academy/Eduard F-4 future build; I helped myself to HGW stencils. This may be ease the process, because they are grouped and I heard, they have no carrier film when applied and therefore no silvering.

Rob, I keep reading about the HGW Wet transfers, unfortunately money is a little restricted, being furloughed and all. Will try them as they sound great.
Sprayed up the main field colour and two bloody filled nubs appeared  where I thought I’d careful sanded them flat....:wallbash:........so strip that portion rub down and spray again.........

I’ve never had such a trial spraying as doing the F4........so many different panels and then they bleed and have to touch them up etc etc :wallbash:

then I thought let’s try the Klear to seal it all in before the decals, first time I have done this.....I know still learning........so what do I do spill a whole spray cup over the fuselage when spinning it around......:wallbash:......clear that up and here it is.....I hope.....next decals and over 200 stencils........first jet, maybe last.......time will tell.....

how do I leave the klear before decals???.

Apart from your description everything looks fine Phil. The surface you want to have for the decaling job should be gloss finish, to reduce silvering possibilities and to blend in the carrier film of the decals better.
Try it on a dummy, if you just mist the very liquid Klear, it dries a little grainy, if you carefully flood the surface, it should be glossy in the end. Carefully means, no running noses and not so much, that you loose surface detail after drying.
I use Pledge (in my case) for everything that has to be varnished clear. For the final coat, I matte it down with Tamiya's flat base. That has to be done very carefully too, if you use too much of the flat base, it looks terrible, like frosted or salted.

I found a blog entry by the talented Designer and modeller Fichtenfoo some years ago, which is a good guideline.

So...........just about to start decals, referred to the layout scheme and noticed I’d painted the tail planes completely the wrong colour and the areas just above on the fuselage :wallbash:.........then I found a horrible area that looked like a tractor had run into it......this is after I’d gloss coated ready to decal.........enjoyed the build .......frustrated as hell with this stage.........

It all looks good to me!  I have done the same thing while airbrushing a clear coat...  forgot to put the cap on the damn AB!

Were I ever to do the F4, I was considering this kit.  But I have a lot of others to build before I do another jet.

Thanks Gaz, the kit is really nice and goes together as well as a Tamiya kit IMHO. This being my first jet, I just didn’t pay attention to the various panel colour differences used on jets. .........I have learnt a lot on this one......

I don't understand what you mean by "panel color differences".  There are a few unpainted areas on the tail of the F-4, maybe because they get sooty...  I never asked why when I was in an RF-4 squadron for a few months.  When I was there, they were painted in the 1980's era gray anti-radar scheme overall...  except for those few areas on the tail.

Ok, I’m admitting defeat on this one and going to strip all the paint off............Harv suggests Windex ( thanks Harv)  which isn’t available over here in the UK, shout out to the guys in UK, what should I use for Vallejo acrylic and Future gloss removal..........

My friend, Windex is the same as any blue glass cleaner.  Mostly ammonia.

Phil,  I truly hate to give you any ideas here and risk losing a fellow propeller head, but good grief that looks awesome!

You are very kind Ernie, be rest assured there is probably going to awhile until the next jet. The paint finish is absolutely awful and IMHO a very contrived scheme. So going to strip the whole model and start again........The ZM P51 is calling........

Thanks Gaz I’ll raid the cupboards.....

The complexity of aircraft models makes stripping a dangerous procedure.  You don't want that stuff getting to the cockpit or other detailed places.  Simple Green, Dettol, and Oven cleaner are also great for stripping acrylic paint.  I really hate the thought of doing it.

Looking great, I have been considering getting a ZM phantom, however, I’m holding out for a Wild Weasel...but I was really tempted by the E that just came out.

Thanks much appreciated. The ZM goes together beautifully, operator error a couple of times. A real joy to build....just starting decals, which are cartograf, these ae also sublime to work with.......I’ll post in progress tomorrow.....
