Was looking at Google earth, check out these aircraft in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia. I saw a picture of a Mig 17 that was identified in Dire Dawa, so went to google earth and found about a dozen Hinds and then found these too, how many do you recognize? I see Mig-15, 17, and 21. T-28 and T-34, and possibly a Mi-8?

John, I know you are a fan of blue, how about this one?

As I have been out of work for almost two months now, my wife and I have been discussing me staying out of work while taking a part time job. I had at one time done commission work over 20 years ago, but have thought about doing it again. What would you guys suggest as where to get started? I don’t really want to be a YouTube vlogger, so what other ways can I get out there?

I’m 1/35 or larger only, no other reason than my bifocals only correct so much. I keep praying for a 1/32 Mig-25.

FYI, in case anyone is waiting and following, I will not be posting any more in-progress pics on this build as I am using this to practice a new technique I want to experiment With. Either I will posting it in finished work as a success, or the project was a total failure and I will be chucking it in the trash can. I am not sure what I am doing will work, but, hey, it’s $17 model! My original intention was just to show how this kit fits together. I understand that there are some great inaccuracies with this kit, and I was not intending to make an accurate Mig-15, I am just using it as a canvas. Wish me luck, and I hope I can post finished pictures by end of next month.

I can completely appreciate that, I am working on two builds with almost no WIPs, just building them learn some new skills. You are right, sometimes you just gotta do it for you.

FIL came back home Friday, no answers yet, but is doing a little better. They gave him two pints of blood and one of iron, now seem to feel better, but still weak.

FYI, the D&S books are available as digital on Amazon Kindle, which I happen to have myself. I also have the squadron book, but I think D&S has better info for the modeler.

After examining this, the scratch is in the clear, this means I should be able to mask off the outer wing and spray a little more clear to fix it. I managed to gat a few minutes in yesterday to start work on the landing gear, sprayed primer and I’m hopefully going to get those done this weekend.

Per detail a scale, the twin rear guns came mid production for the -3’s.

“US Navy aircraft in 1939 carried a color scheme dating back to May 1925, requiring aircraft to be painted Overall Aluminum, with upper wing surfaces painted Orange Yellow 614. Hulls and floats of seaplanes were painted Non-Specular (flat) Light Grey 602. This scheme was used until December 1940, when all ship-based aircraft were painted overall Light Grey 602. Patrol aircraft wore overall Non-Specular Light Grey 602 except for surfaces viewed from above, which were painted Blue-Grey (FS 35189) * . Two months prior to the Pearl Harbor attack, orders came down requiring all USN and Marine Corps aircraft to be painted overall Non-Specular Light Grey 602 except for upper surfaces, which were painted Blue-Grey (FS 35189). On aircraft with folding wings, the portion of the wing viewed when folded was also painted Blue-Grey. Note that sun fading on blue gray was rapid and extreme, these planes had a very mottled and chalky appearance, oil stained the blue darker and sun faded it almost a powder blue. Fading happened within a week or two, and if you look at aircraft #2 and #4, you can see the color fade. These are high quality original photos and are not colorized.

DN Models does have several masks available, and if you check Hannants, they list a few decal sets.

My FIL is still in the hospital, but today may be a calmer day I can figure out what to do about the scratch on the wing, I have to see if I can spot repair, or if I will be repainting the wing. My goal is to have this finished by Monday, my next IPMS meeting. I also need to paint the prop and landing gear, but after weathering, it will be finished. That’s a major accomplishment for me because I have so many projects started, but this will be the first one completely finished this year. Then I can finish up the big helo, and then concentrate on finishing other stuff.

I live about 100 miles from redstone, I could go and take some measurements if you wish. Perhaps if you ask NASA nicely, they can provide you blueprints also.

I suggest you familiarize yourself with International Traffic in Arms Regulations ("ITAR," 22 CFR 120-130) 121.1 US munitions list. You pretty much broke ITAR laws with your first post, and this post pretty much got you some extra attention. Good luck with your quest.

I was in the middle of cleaning the resin cockpit this morning when I had to take my Father in law to the ER. He had a hemoglobin and iron levels that were rock bottom, I spent the whole day in the ER. They admitted him and are still running test to figure out why. Ten hours in a hospital is not conducive to modeling. It’s been one fun day.

If I were the owner of this site, I would record ip addresses and take some screenshots, in case someone comes asking about them later.

Here is a scenario I see, these people are in fact fishing for plans to sell or take to Iran. The US Govt makes certain platforms and items, both real and intellectual property, controlled. Mainly because of nefarious individuals that could supply these to governments that they don’t want to have. Anyone that is contacted by them should remember that even supplying or planning to supply simple items, export controlled, intended for a warfighter is highly illegal and could result in substantial jail time even if you had the slightest suspicion of it. No joke, google it. As some people had noticed, They don’t appear to be legit in their intentions. There really is only one current operator of F-14’s in the world, which is a red flag. Just saying...

Matte coat completed. I may be respirating the right wing from the stripes to the tip, I must have scratched the paint while i was spraying the clear, but now there is a very long and visible scratch immortalized under it. I was also not happy with the chipping on that wing, so probably back to the booth tomorrow.

Ooohhh, that’s pretty! I may have to pick up another 17.

My initial impressions of what needs to be fixed or replaced... if you just want to build it out of the box, you don’t need to do anything outside the instructions, it will build and fit fairly well. One thing you will need to do is sand or scrape any flash or burrs from the mating surface seams, also, true up the joints between the front and rear fuselage halves, just to make them flat, I do this with a sheet of 150 grit on the table. Glue the rear to the front fuselage halves before you join them. These windscreens are all a little wrong, the left windscreen is a Mig-17PF, slightly too vertical, it should lay back maybe another 5 degrees, but pretty accurate. The right windscreen is way too vertical, it should lay back until it touches the hoop, however, you can’t just cut it and lay it back, as then it would be too short. A solution could be that you cut it back at an angle, then use the 17’s windscreen as the new forward glass. I may try this as a future project as there are some other minor shape issues with the framing, but for the 15 and the non-radar 17, the squadron one really captures the shape well, and it’s fairly thick, so it’s easy to shape. As far as the rear canopy, it again has a nice profile for the 17PF, but maybe a little low for the the other versions. The base framing for the rear canopy is OK in shape, but missing detail inside. The external framingEduard’s early PE set (32 050) has some parts to help with this, however, you will need to scratchbuild other parts of it. Getting hard to find, the G-factor canopy is a direct replacement for the plastic part, but has detail that is missing from the kit. Regardless, any version will need the rear armor glass installed. The cockpit will build very basic, at minimum, the above Eduard PE set will get you a nice cockpit, along with the canopy parts, a nice PE seat and belts, and some other misc external parts (including a nice set of flaps. There appear to be three or four resin sets, However, I think the Lonestar resin cockpit is the ticket, it’s a super easy drop in, no sanding fit, you will just need to cut the pour stubs off the seat and gunsight. The IP included has a cloth shroud on top, this is not common from what I have seen, however, you can sand it down easily, or you can just carve the plastic above the IP to fit. There are some other detail issues issues, like wing fences and the gear, but none of these will keep it from looking like a Mig-15. Aftermarket decals are the last recommendation, the kit decals only give you the option for Chinese birds. Other sets will get you many other choices, including eastern block and African, as well as some Middle East options.

I love to tinker with cheap plastic kits. It’s my curse.
