Trumpeter Mig-15 project, not unbuildable!
1to1scale replied to 1to1scale's topic in LSM 1/35 and Larger Work In Progress
I managed to get the canopy masked up, man, this was not easy! Squadron did not have very clear frames on this, took nearly an hour to mask. -
I have been seeing people bash the Trumpeter Mig-15 for years. I have looked at the plastic a few times and thought, “That’s not too bad.” So it was time to put up or shut up. Some thoughts: 1. I believe this was the first Trumpeter kit released, so, give it some slack jack! 2. It’s not Tamiya! 3. It dirt cheap. 4. The HpH alternative is $200.00+ So that being said, time to start this project. I will not reveal my final finish to the end, as this is a special “can I do it?” project. I have never attempted this kind of finish, and it will either rock, or be a disaster. Step one was to cut all four quarters off the sprues. I test fit them together and was not too bad, however, there were some burrs and flash, so I took a 100 grit sanding stick to the inside surfaces and they were gone in a few swipes, I then clipped off the tabs that held the front to the rear halves together, these just intefered. I then trued the surfaces flat against some sandpaper on the table, this was just some light passes to make sure the surfaces were flat. I then glued the non-pin sides of the fuselage together, starting at the top, letting the glue set, then moving to the bottom, finally aligning the top and bottom centers, pressing them into alignment with my fingers. Putting the two halves together, I found that some alignment pins were too long, I clipped them all about 1/2 their length, problem solved, the sides fit together great. I did then have to sand the front/rear joints flat as there were some ridges near the joints, a few swipes with 320 grit stick solved it. The wings were next. The wings had the worst burrs along the inner mating edges, again, a sanding stick took care of it, they fit together great afterward. These were more of a fit issue to the fuselage, but all it took was some truing of the edges with a sanding stick. You can tell that the rear rearward step was the culprit, this little step required squaring up, the forward part of the step needed more sanding than the trailing edge, after, the fit was good. I went along the whole edge to make sure they were square, not the wings fit great. Next came the part I dreaded, the cockpit. As I wanted to do as little work to it as possible, i had both new and old Eduard PE sets, but I chose to go with the Lonestar resin cockpit as I didn’t feel like gluing tiny parts in a cockpit that may not be very visible. I dreaded fitting old brittle resin and having to chop and sand. I was pleasantly surprised that it required almost no cutting or sanding to fit. The only part that required trimming was the top of the hood on the kit parts to clear the resin IP hood. I actually over trimmed, it took all of 15 min to fit this. At at this stage I had 6 hours of work into it.

Korean War - Looking for Mig-15 and F-86F Kit Reccomendation
1to1scale replied to crazypoet's topic in Modelling Discussion
It’s sort of close as a Mig-17PF, shape is ok, but the front windscreen should have 2 horizontal frames rather than 1 center. On the mig-15, the Squadron canopy is the only way to go. -

Funny you should ask about Mig-15, I just started working on the Trumpeter kit yesterday. I was preparing for the worst, but was pleasantly surprised. The fit is better than I expected. The exception being that you treat it like a short-run European kit. First thing I did was cut the locating pins off the front to rear fuselage joints, lightly sanded the surfaces flat against the bench on a piece of sandpaper, and glued the front and rear halves together while flat on the bench, working the seam a 1/2 at a time, I ended up with a pretty nice seam, l then trued up the sides with a sanding stick and took the burrs off the mating surfaces. I then went to work on the wings, to my horror, they were not even Mig-15 wings, they were 17 wings! I bought this kit off someone a few years ago, and they must have accidentally swapped a 17 sprue in the box. Luckily, I had another 15 in the stash. And grabbed those wings, then fit them to the body, it takes a little work, but if you sand a few strategic spots, they will fit pretty nice. I also fit a Lonestar resin cockpit and a squadron canopy. So far I have a grand total of 5 hours in it, and I’m ready to paint the cockpit, and glue the fuselage and wings together. All it takes is some basic sanding and a little care in assembly sequence, I have seen some nice examples built. I agree that the HpH is a more accurate and detailedkit, however, you can get the Trumpeter kit, a cockpit, a canopy and decals for $60, $80 if you could the second kit I had to crack open. I’ll be posting some pics later. As as far as the F-86, the kinetic is the better of the two I think. Hasegawa is old and low on detail. https://www.ebay.com/itm/KINETIC-1-32-F-86F-30/123931626590?hash=item1cdae68c5e:g:CfgAAOSwNaBdmzIr -

Right now I’m waiting for a buddy to ship me the rockets from Minnesota, and letting the filler fully dry and shrink, then I’ll spray some primer and see where we are. I had an idea for the base, I am going to mount a couple 1/144 Syrian Mig-17’s down low and have the A-4 in a diving bank towards them. Yesterday, I drove 45 min to a plastic supply yesterday and got some 3/8 and 1/2 acrylic rod. My goal is to have this done by the November 13 TN show. I think 6 weeks is enough time. Mustang is almost done and this one is not far behind. -

I have been working on and off on this Israeli A-4H Skyhawk since July and it’s ready for paint. I chose to build an early Skyhawk, the subject is Ezra Dotan’s bird, the one and only Skyhawk to get air-to-air kills, he shot down two Syrian Mig-17’s using his 18 shot rocket pods, shooting the first down with 38 rockets, and the second one using his 30mm DEFA guns. I like to pick unusual aircraft for my subjects, and this one was quite a challenge as there is not much in pictures available. I used two Hasegawa Skyhawk kits to piece this together, as both were missing pieces, and one had broken parts. The main fuselage and wings were previously glued together and, broken apart, and reassembled, fixing damaged areas. So this was technically a restoration. I ended up using just the gun pods and barrels from the Cutting edge conversion kit and Isradecals. The pilot and seat are from Aerobonus.

Hobbycraft F6A D-Day - Ready for inspection!
1to1scale replied to 1to1scale's topic in D-Day 75th Anniversary Group Build
Just out of the paint booth, I need to do a few touch ups, the tape took a little paint with it. Not the primers fault, since it was in a few small spots, I failed at degreasing and prepping. I do realize there are some errors, the letters are a bit too large, and possibly the wrong color. I found material that indicated it was white, some said gray, others yellow. After I unmasked, I found that there should have been more contract between the white of the insignia and the letters, so maybe yellow. I’m still undecided if I will change it. For now, I’m letting the paint dry. i used a mix of Tamiya pants for it. OD was XF62/XF61/XF49 equal parts, and neutral gray was Tamiya’s neutral gray, but with 25% white added. Used NATO Black and Stynilrez white primer for all white, it’s not as white as XF2, so a good substitute. Insignia blue was a 60%/40% mix of Dk Sea Blue and Royal Blue.- 95 replies

HobbyBoss A-26 Invader: Holy Thread Drift, Batman!
1to1scale replied to Clunkmeister's topic in General Discussion
It’s very amusing watching this thread here and on the “other” forum, over there discussion has turned to threats and name calling and warnings of locking the thread! The wheels has fallen off the bus and it’s careening down the mountain... -
Lol, not just UK, that and avocado green were universal 70’s colors. I’m sure somewhere there was a butternut yellow alien spaceship cruising around the galaxy.

No need to put down eBay if you didn’t bid enough. You know you can put your max bid in on an item and proxy bidding will automatically bid for you during the auction? If you truly want something, bid enough money, you will always win. This system is put in place to prevent sniping. As a matter of fact, a sniper will never win against a proxy bid.

This is my latest acquisition, although not very expensive, I have been looking for this boxing for a very long time. This one took a month to ship from Japan, but finally came yesterday.

Your colour and marking preference?
1to1scale replied to Sir Desmond Glazebrook's topic in General Discussion
I don’t really have a favorite, as I tend to do a different scheme every build. I guess if it’s a theme, I like heavily chipped and weathered finishes. -
Soak the parts in simple green or Wesley’s Bleache White, either will cut paint and chrome, just don’t soak clear parts in it.

Oh no you didn’t..... Dang, I have been drooling over the SU-17/22 Lemkits for a while, but the +$200 price has been a reality check. Make sure you get yourself a set of the Zots decals.

Progress has been slow, but I made an effort to get it masked up today, and I’m most of the way there.
