Chris, I kind of kept the wreck of the Nautilus going in a secret until the reveal thread. But there’s two products I used for this. The iron oxide paint and an activator. The paint will naturally rust over time if left alone, but I’m impatient. Available on Amazon. I will warn you, it stinks pretty bad. Like someone opened the septic tank stinks.

Now that the day has officially come, Happy Birthday young man!!

Just finished sweating bullets by taping off and painting the wing tips. No paint lift!! Success!! And of course I had to clean up that gray to red line as well. This is a milestone of progress at this point. Not it’s just fiddly bits like gear doors and LEX’s getting painted and glued on. Might start some decals tomorrow too!

I’d love to pick up the Trumpeter Missouri at a deal. Of course my Arizona is just collecting dust in the stash.

Kia- change the oil every 3500 miles no matter what the oil jockeys or owners manual suggests. I know a top notch Kia mechanic on another forum that is constantly telling us stories of motors blowing up because “the oil container said it’s good for 10,000 miles….” Maybe a Honda, but not a Kia. I think a car company would own the market if they came out with a really nice car without all that lane keeping crap, self braking advanced cruise control, warning bells and lights flashing because an on coming car had a sun reflection hit your sensors…. Our Honda Pilot is the worst. And don’t get me started on throttle response lag. I swear I sometimes stomp the pedal and hear elevator music playing. Okay, enough of my boomer rant about cars made in the good old days. Peter, looks great and you’ll enjoy it.

Post pics in WIP section.

Kai, love your syfi builds! Your ARK II brings back a lot of memories. I’m a syfi nut myself. Check out my Seaview build in the group wet build section. I’m kind of doing the same-re-living my childhood one kit at a time! Well, until that adulting thing gets in the way. Wife keeps handing me projects, along with the house.

Hell, couldn’t get it off clean even using 2000 grit sandpaper.
-
Not so fast….. I got red overspray on the bottom of the wing.

Not the cleanest edge, but if I try to make it better it will get worse. And wish me luck. I still have to tape off the tips and paint them blue.

Yea, 20-30 years from now? Who knows. Maybe my kids and grandkids will still be working on my stash! I was there too for the film to digital change. I worked with a wedding photog that taught me a lot about lighting, fill flash, etc. Man, you’re right about those early digital cameras. He bought one of the early Fuji digital cams. When it started taking off, he retired because the investment wasn’t worth his time left in the industry. I have an old Canon 5D classic I haven’t taken out of the bag in 4 years. I should be ashamed. Small collection of L glass to go with it. I really need to get involved again with photography. What pissed me off was Canon quit supporting the old bodies in their editing software. All it did was auto download when you plug in. Now I have to pull the card and put it in a reader and download images manually. And now the price of any basic full frame Canon body is out of touch with the occasional hobbyist. But living out on a lake now, I could get some spectacular wildlife and sunset pics. I decided years ago sunrise pics are too early in the morning.

I remember hearing film cameras are dead too. There’s a big resurgence in film these days. I see maybe a few companies putting out files for kits, but are you (the average modeler) going to invest in a printer, gain the knowledge to run it, space to put it, clean it, etc…vs. opening up a new kit? I for one would never go that route with all the kits in my stash. I do however see a market for obscure kits printed by a vendor and shipped like a kit.

Exactly what I was thinking of using. Today I was just taking the Tamiya tape and sticking on my shirt 3 or 4 times. I tried rescribing one of the lines and my scribing tape lifted another 3” off the wing. Out of respect for Paul Fisher I restrained from hurling this out into the middle of the lake. I did get the gray repainted today.

Rob, if memory serves me correctly, the 1965 and earlier 289 motors were black. Went blue in ‘66 And Ford did have chrome valve covers on them. Here’s a pic I stole off the WWW of a ‘65 Of course old Carrol wasn’t happy with those cast iron intakes and Motorcraft 4 barrel carbs (One of the best designed carbs in the history of mankind as far as I’m concerned!) so everything he built got a power adder. GT 350’s got an aluminum high rise and a Holley carb. Exotics got the Weber stacks. -
My tiny spot on the LE? Yea, it grew. I taped off the red to sand the gray paint. Peeled the red off half the wing tip. 😡 I am so over this model. I just want it done now. It’s going to be a long time before I start another resin kit, and instead of standing over the sink washing it, I’m going to wash and wet sand every nook and cranny I can get to.

Now I’d have been tempted to paint the covers gold because that’s how my Fairlane was originally. Funny, one year change to ‘66 and the Mustang engine was the traditional Ford blue. But the ‘65 Fairlane was black and gold. Well, by the time I got it, grunge and gold! Of course I wasn’t having any of that. I painted that thing blue and threw on a set of go faster aftermarket covers. 45 years later and I still have those Cal-Custom valve covers in a box somewhere. -
Well the back yard is finally safe to mow. I got my lazy retired butt out of bed yesterday morning and today at 6:30 am before the heat set in. Humidity was much worse at 97%. But temps were 73. I had to go over and around all the trench work area with a garden rake to not only smooth it out, but to get the rocks up. Big rocks. Like the size of a baseball or bigger that would surly destroy my mower. I’ve already done about 90% of the front yard as well. I have a half dozen piles of rocks still out in the driveway I need to shovel up now. Needless to say, I’m wiped out and bench time just isn’t happening because I’d fall asleep! My wife is a bit upset because I think I dozed off about 4-6 times yesterday and she couldn’t get there. She envy’s my naps and ability to sleep through the riots brought on by the grandkids.

So true. Also along those lines, a few months back my son that’s building custom Corvettes now asked me, “Dad, how did you do it before the internet?” From finding obscure parts or fittings to just knowledge how to do something. How to do a motor swap, how to find used motors, what transmission will fit the car body and motor…… He about died when I told him at one time we had to fill out order forms and mail them in with a check or CC number or pay for COD.

Thanks Maru! All I have to say is….”But it’s a dying hobby!”

Better? I do have some rework areas now. One was very bad prep on my part. Deep sanding gouges from squaring up the vertical stabilizer on one side. Ugly!! After lightly sanding And the infamous primer lifting off the resin. Two steps forward, one backwards.
