Operation "Torch" questions
CrankyCrafstman replied to CrankyCrafstman's topic in Modelling Discussion
Great thanks 1to1 -
Hey all I have a question for all the knowledgeable people on here. What aircraft did the Allies face during operation "Torch"? I have a Trumpeter Bf109G-2 trop and would like to know if this would have been used during operation "Torch" or if it came out later in the war. Also what armament did the Bf109G-2 trop have? Thanks

I must be crazy, B-24J on the bench.

Yeah it's a real shame they couldn't save at least 1 of those last few built. Have you found any information on whether the turrets that come in the kit are correct (disregarding that they are done wrong). I purchased the Master brass barrels for the HK B-17 to use on the B-24J. My question is did they ever use flash hiders on the B-24's? Thanks Ron -
Short Sunderland MkII
CrankyCrafstman replied to ThomasProbert's topic in LSM 1/35 and Larger Work In Progress
And I thought that the B-24 and Lancaster were big. That's huge!!! Imagine building a 1/32 Martin JRM Mars there even bigger over a 200' wing span. I'm definitely going to follow this as the Sunderland is one of my favorites, nice build so far Tom. Ron -
Trumpeter P-40F build! Checkertails?
CrankyCrafstman replied to 1to1scale's topic in LSM 1/35 and Larger Work In Progress
Hey 1to1 Watch out for the Zotz Checkertail decals they are thick and brittle. If you look at my build closely you will see that I had to touch up with paint were they broke off they are bigger then the tail planes and rudder, so they hang over which makes it very difficult to trim them with out wrecking them. -

No, the seats are shown in there rear most position so the pilot and co pilot can exit or enter there sets with all there gear on. B-17 and B-25 had this set up also. -
yahu Colour Instrument Panels (Jan – Feb 2018)
CrankyCrafstman replied to James H's topic in Aircraft Reviews
Eduard makes one for the Trumpeter 1/32 kit if you can find one. Check out my "Checkertail" build and you can see the one I used on it. -
Stash updated RAF instrument decals - USAAF instrument decals - USN instrument decals - Allied instrument bezels - cockpit details. Hopefully that should hold me over for a while.
-
Thanks James I guess I'll have to get Airscales placards and other cockpit stuff. I keep running into situations where I see other modlers using there stuff and I don't have them, so it's time to upgrade my stash.
-
Hi James could you elaborate a little more on how you did this and what you used to make the compass and any decals that you used Thanks CC

Hi James, not being a Lancaster affishinato, what is the round grey part that is sitting on the little part of photo etch the bends down through the opening in the IP? Isthat a compass and is it a part from the kit? It didn't come in my Airscale kit.

Jug-gernaut P47D in NMF
CrankyCrafstman replied to DocRob's topic in LSM 1/35 and Larger Work In Progress
Hey Rob Great build nice P&W R-2800. Just abit of advice, the magneto on the top of the gear case between the two distributors should be a semi gloss black. This is from the P&W R-2800 book. Look at my build P-47D "checkertail". -
Here is my Trumpeter P-47D razerback. I'm doing it as "Big Stud" LTC Robert Lee Baseler Commanding Officer - 325th FG. I had trouble with the old micro scale decals, they were pretty fragile. They tore in a couple places I'll have to figure out a way to fix them, possibly hand paint them to touch them up. Here are some pics look em over and let me know what you think. Added the wiring behind the IP with 0.3 & 0.5mm lead wire. Used Eduards photo etch cockpit set and HGW fabric belts. I used Vallejo paints, dull dark green in the cockpit. Used Vallejo yellow zinc chromate here to bad this all gets closed up so you can't see it. Painted the cylinders dark steel with silver fin edges, center is P&W grey that I custom mixed based off of photos I have. You can see the P&W grey better in this picture also you can see the wiring for the magneto and the two distributors also the plug wires This shows the rear gear case & accessory drives also the intake piping. This shows the gear case and ignition tube for the spark plugs. This are the recognition lights left red, right green I drilled a hole about a 1mm deep and filled it with red and green clear paint. This photo shows the HGW seat belts they look really good but are very tedious to put together. This shows the gun site part photo etch part kit. I have more pics, but didn't want to clutter up this post. Still have to do the checkertail decals and insignias then a coat of flat clear and hopefully it will be finished. Haven't had a chance to work on it, I've been busy messing around with the B-24J and the Lancaster, but I hope to finish it soon. Some how the pictures got jumbled up, sorry about that. Thanks CC

Hey I'm back So here is the engine from the Trumpeter F4F it's not bad, but needs work to make it into a B-24 engine. First here are som pics of the sprue. -

Hey hubert It's probably to small which means the nacelles are to small also. Here is a picture of the kit cowling and a P&W r-2800-21 thats in my Trumpy P-47 Razorback you can see the lack of detail. I think with a little bit of detail it might look passable, maybe. -

So I just measured the engine diameter of the kit engine and it scales out to 43.232" (1,098.092 8mm) the actual P&W R-1830 should measure 48.062.5' (1,220.7875mm) which leaves a difference of 4.8350" (122 809mm) thats 2.4175" (61.4025mm) off in radius in 1/32 scale thats 1.92mm!!! Ouch! The Trumpeter F4F P&W R-1830 (shown in the post above) will not fit in the cowling of the Hobbyboss B-24J The Trumpeter F4F P&W R-1830 scales out correctly its 48.0625" in dia. Guess we're stuck using the crapy kit engines. -

I'm back So here is the engine from the Trumpeter F4F it's not bad, but needs work to make it into a B-24 engine. First here are som pics of the sprue. Here is what needs to be fixed. Part before modifying. What needs to be modified. Snip those off then add the prop pitch regulator. Engine still needs to have the valve rocker covers with oil return lines added (they are on the sprue), exhaust pipes, rear cover & plug wires (need to drill holes in the cylinders for them), etc. Some simple scratch building and one nice engine to have open for maintenance in a diorama.
