No report on rework tonight.
Finished the masking.

For masking of non-glas areas I use Mr. Hobby masking fluid.

I don’t use it for glas parts because on one occasion in the past the glas of a plane became cloudy.

I started with the cockpit:

followed by the canopy:

Then came the landing gear bays:

And finally the small bits:

Landing light and position lights:

That’s it for now. Now the airbrush will be unpacked...

Thanks Peter,

Always use this method. The rubber like appearance is resistant and can be applied very easy and precise. Excess can be simply wiped away after application.

I‘m really happy now that I‘m close to the paintshop!

What about your P-39 and the F-4?

Masking is better than reworking and the best is PAINTING, so close now, Kai. Your subassemblies look gorgeous and the Mirage will be a stunner soon. I had once a slight clouding effect with Mr. Masking Sol Neo on a canopy which I gave a Future bath before. The masking fluid was on the canopy for some weeks. Now I tried the water based Mr. Masking fluid and have to see how this worked out on my Hellcat canopy. It's a bit thinner compared to NEO and a bit less smelly.

You know exactly, when you have used a certain word, like rework, too often while posting, when exactly these letters on the keyboard are broken :D.

Cheers Rob

Thank you Rob and also for the tipp.

I will try Mr. Masking fluid. Water based is always a good option!

The canopy of my kit is also of such bad quality that I cannot use it. It‘s wavy on the surface and full of distortions. Will send a claim to Italeri.

I don’t know which kind of final quality control they have.
I‘m really lucky that I have a second kit where I took the replacement from.

What did we state regarding quality?: Of which value is a quality system when your quality standards are that low?

But now I‘m close to the step which I love: The painting!

I think there's a Gremlin somewhere hidden in the fuselage , so much bad luck is no coincidence, thank god you are now at the painting stage,

Looking forward to that,

Cheers,

Frank

Hi Kai, no you do seem to have got an extra dodgy version of the kit. The canopy on mine is fine.

I use Incredible White Mask from a company called Grafix in Cleveland USA for liquid masking and it's great. Never had any problems with clouding, etc. From memory I got it off Amazon.

Hope the paint booth work goes smoother than all your problems so far. :thumbsup2:

That’s good to hear Gus! Are yours also so thin?

Thanks also for your tipp with the masking fluid. I will search for it.

Today I will start the painting process. Since you already primed yours: Have you gone further with the painting process? I‘m really curious to see your Cheetah in her stunning livery!

Looking forward to seeing your Mirage moving through the paint shop.

A few years back, I built a 1/48th scale Kfir with a cammo finish which should be similar to your plans; Paints were Ammo by Mig and went down without a hitch.

BTW, any idea what the white stripes are for on the wings leading edge?

Great looking Kfir, Peter! The combination of a Mirage and a J79-engine is stunning! Do you also have a photo from the underside?

I really love the color scheme! Hope that mine will turn out as beautiful as yours.

My color scheme is quite close to yours but has the yellow-orange triangles with black edges on the wings and the vertical tail:

Thanks Kai

I'm positive your cammo work will be top flight. I can't find any pics of the undersides except a few under construction pics  - I used Mig FS36375. I love the IAF cammo scheme with the black and orange triangles ... can't wait to see your Mirage hit the paint shop

Keep 'em comin

Before I started with the priming process I first reworked and airbrushed the inside of the intakes:

I had to mask the cone due to the weathering on it.

Now it is repainted and I can mask it tomorrow:

This was followed by painting the windshield and canopy black:

Then I primed the plane with Mr. Surfacer 1200 to find out the flaws which have to be reworked. As expected there were several that occurred:

As expected most of the rework has to be done on the tail cone and the intake areas where the fit was worst.

So back to the bench for reworking of the marked areas and then back to the paintshop.

For all the work and sweat you put into the Mirage, the amount of re-works seems mighty small and a testament to your patience and building skills.

Looking forward to seeing the Mirage primed with no black re-do circles.:thumbsup2:

Thanks Peter, these were exactly my thoughts. All flaws are easy to fix and then I can go on.

Man...  that is one thing about scribing and rescribing that kills me.  It's truly the biggest put off.  Otherwise....   great work!

You’re right Gary. I even don’t like it especially when you already had so much rework.
I should build a Tamiya- or a WNW-kit next. On the Corsair I had no rework at all. Great kit!

For the rework I used for the first time black superglue from AK:

This is really an awesome stuff since you see exactly where you apply it and when sanding you clearly can locate if the sanding can be finished:

Thanks for the heads up on the AK Black Super Glue as it absolutely solves the problem of knowing what gaps where actually filled with CCA.

The Mirage is looking so good and can't wait to see her as she rolls through the paint shop.
