My Peking Duck story. Being from the east coast and SC, my exposure to Chinese food is the typical Chinese buffets in strip malls or older restaurant locations. I really enjoyed Chinese lunch buffets during the work week. (And my waistline showed it). We use to go once a week. About 17-18 years ago the wife took me to San Francisco to a work conference. One evening we went to dinner with 3-4 other couples at the conference. Hotel Concierge recommended a place in China Town. “Go down XXX street to the green door with #6 (arbitrary number, cannot remember the exact number) on it. Go through the door, go up the stairs and take the door on the right. What ever you do, DO NOT open the door on the left. Now keep in mind, there were no signs of a business, much less a restaurant, posted anywhere. Just a metal green door on the street with #6 painted on it about 4” tall. Opened the door on the right and entered a huge, big beautiful dining room with huge gold and crystal chandeliers hanging over each table, wall to wall oriental carpeting and decorations, waiters all wearing black pants, finely pressed white shirts, all clean cut and bending over to assist getting us seated and waiting on us. That was the best damned Chinese food I ever ate in my life. All the couples bought a different plate and we made our own “buffet”. Peking Duck was to die for. When I got home, I could not go back to our Chinese buffets for 6-8 months. It just wasn’t real Chinese food. But to this day I still wonder what was behind that door to the left 6

There were only 2 problems with it - firstly, the karaoke was in Mandarin and secondly, it looked like if you weren't in the Triads you weren't getting a shot anyway! One of those places where every head turns and stares at you when you open the door, so needless to say we beat a hasty retreat and went to the Irish bar down the street. 1 1

Not the usual spot to find a good Chinese restaurant as most are in the 'burbs. We'll be going to Mandarin in a couple weeks though at the request of our oldest. He wants to go there to celebrate his graduation from grade 8. Sept will be the start high school for him. 2
