RR Spey powered RAF Phantom conversion

Well the chequers turned out well, not perfect as there were some runners underneath the tape, my fault. But the roundels will cover these. The greatest hurdle has been overcome. After this I hope to do a stick and dip project.

Well, here it is.

i must say the aftermarket decals I had to source fight me all the way. The roundels are from Extradecal but are thick and prone to chipping. I have had bad experiences with Tamiya decals in the past but in this case they work very well. I hope the side roundels do conform eventually. Fingers crossed.

The camo looks exceptional! I love these 2-tone-liveries! Your conversion is really amazing! Lots of work that pays off!

Thanks, but using two kits gives a lot if problems. At the moment I am in the “fighting you all the way” phase. And I keep struggling to maintain my motivation. The tailplanes have been fitted so that classic look finally emerges. And the Tamiya nosewheelassembly was easy, just screwing it doen. The Revell main undercarriage wasn’t.

Well from where I am sitting it looks pretty darn awesome....errrrr I mean, no it doesn't.  Give in and send it to me...

Seriously though mate, we dont see your struggles, only the results of your struggles.  She really looks the part now with the tailplanes and decals on.  You are nailing it buddy.  Dont give in just yet, wait until the clearcoat is on and it's on your shelf...then give in!

Or send it to me...either way is a good outcome

Plenty of work to do in the cockpit, canopy and underwing stores. Not to mention the lack of suitable serial decals for the fuselage and underwing. I have most of them apart from the letter “V”. That is holding up progress.

I wanted to fit the tailpipes but an earlier oversight came back to haunt me. Before I fitted the Revell tail  I forgot to cut away the lower fuselage tabs.  Although I had managed to trim them back with great difficulty through the tailpipe opening it was not enough to use the Tamiya pipes. What to do? In the end I improvised by rolling up pieces of black sandpaper and that did the trick. So there is an illusion of depth. They say modelling is f...u....n.....

Sold out after my last visit.;)

Regarding the burnercans being slightly undersize on my build I did that intentionally but it is relatively easy to widen the openings. I decided not to go that extra mile after all the hacking and cutting and didn't want too much detail lost.

Fitted the divebrake actuators which still need to be painted. The undercarriage doors and actuators and the auxiliary doors. Some touching up here and there and next stage is finalizing the serial decals si the underwing stores can be fitted.

The cockpit will be one of the last things to tackle as Tamiya chose  the most difficult way by providing separate canopy and frame parts. Hiding the seams will be a challenge. One of many in this build:)

Cees, on my last couple Tamiya F-4 builds I hid the seam by painting a thin strip of tan along the clear parts. This reproduces the look of the sealant that's used on the 1/1 canopies.

Great job on the camo and the installed components! With all the problems you already solved during the build you will also solve the one with the canopies.

Looking forward to seeing your progress! :151_41_44_712.09472830013627761

Thanks Anthony,

More and more things are getting fitted and that is a lot of fun. I dread doing the walkways though as they are complicated with radiating red striping and the incomplete serials, yet. Ejection seats are also being worked on.

Getting there in the end. But I have already started on a Tamiya P-51D Musting which will be finished in Dutch colours. Should not get distracted though;)
