Monogram Kingfisher

Recommended Posts

Peter,

The Kingfisher looks awesome.  There's alot to be said for the yellow-wing period.  She's very nice to look at.

Hopefully your dental surgery goes well.  I'll be wishing some positive healthful energy your way.

Thanks Martin

A nice pic for sure of the wheeled version and it was assigned to the Arizona as well. Just wish there was a mask set for the canopy as I have a second kit with enough parts for the wheeled version. Without the mask set, just way too much nerve-wracking work in 48th scale.

Peter, the finish, as is your trademark, is flawless and beautiful.  You really pulled the best out of this 'simple' kit!  Good luck with the dentist - take your time getting back - I've taken a few days off here to try and catch up on a few things.  A break is good!

My latest research agrees with your explanation. I've since did a bit of research and originally the glossy orange yellow upper wings (started in the biplane era) were to help locate downed and lost aircraft on the ground. The painting of the wings continued on monoplanes as well until the start of WWII.

Thanks Chris very much appreciated your comments on the Kingfisher- just as painting and decaling are my favorites part of any build and good wishes on my oral surgery scheduled for tomorrow. I have to admit I'm a bit nervous as the procedure is scheduled to last for between an hour and an hour and a half plus recovery.

I would absolutely prefer to take a short break your way to boost up the juices and mojo.

While I have been going extra slow on the Kingfisher, letting each stage thoroughly dry before moving to the next one, I started tinkering with my next build: the Revell 1/32 Spitfire MkIIa. Originally, I was going to use a good number of Barracuda resin to bring the detail level up but only used their joystick, seat armor plate and gun sight so far with the balance being from the Quinta detail set. I'm planning on using the Barracuda resin set for the exterior corrections, using Edgar's correction notes (the link posted in in John's build). Maybe early next week I'll feel up to starting a build thread, as a lot of the work in the front office is now done.

Your Kingfisher is a beauty with the decals adding even more contrast to the colorful livery. Glad that everything was good with the repair works in the end. Let's hope the same for your oral treatment, hopefully without that much drilling. All the best my friend.

Cheers Rob

Thanks Rob and I was lucky the repairs finally worked. Just love those between the war year paint schemes - they just jump right out of the display case.

Getting a be apprehensive about tomorrows surgery and hopefully, the discomfort will ease up in a few days after the procedure. Just a long time coming.

COMING TOGETHER

The worst is over and finally I can see the finish line. At first, if it wasn’t for the stress cracking that seemed to take forever to resolve and then my oral surgery last Saturday, the Kingfisher would have already crossed the finish line (maybe).

After all the decals were down and in place, I needed apply a seal coat of clear gloss but couldn’t: I always wear a respirator and paint using my spray booth but after the surgery, there was no way I could wear a mask and the Kingfisher had to sit and wait. Finally, yesterday I was up to getting back to the build and the mask wasn’t very uncomfortable when air brushing.

Tamiya Clear Gloss LP-9 had the honors and when dried, I was itching beyond control to remove all the canopy masking that took nearly five days to do way back when and see what it looked like. I was amazed … not too bad at all and I was very pleased with the results – just wouldn’t want to do it again.

Now starts adding all the small details, some detail brush painting, add the beaching gear and outrigger floats and call it a day.

Just wanted to post a few photographs of how the Kingfisher has progressed. Hoping to cross the finish line this weekend and on to my next built: the Revell Spitfire Mk lla.
