Those rivets look mighty fine, probably the best way how to replicate the real deal. der Flieger is nicely detailed as well, your figure painting is progressing with lighting speed. Really nice. Is he wearing US jacket ?

Thanks Martin.  I don't know the US jacket well enough to say so either way.  There's nothing in the box that says it's a US jacket.

Well it sure looks good and tedious Gary not my patience level though.:unworthy:

It's only decals really.  And not that many of them.  Probably a lot less than on a 1/32 scale Phantom.  Like I have said before the only bad point is leaving them for 8 hours to dry.

You did a great job on that figure, how did you do his collar? It looks real.

Ron G

Thanks Ron.  I did the collar like this:  Black primer...    stippled in dark brown.  Stippled in a gold color...   and then dry-brushed off white.  The idea of stippling in the colors was to avoid totally covering the colors below.

I wanted to get paint down today.   But after a morning of creating custom decals and custom masks, the day is starting to cool...   It's winter here in Australia.

Last night, I settled on my pilot and scheme.   Karl Willius of 1/JG 26 on service on the Ostfront.

Decals.  Seems the ink didn't level perfectly.

I make two extras of everything.  In normal vision, they don't look as bad.  Wish I could just ring up Cartograf and have what I need delivered, next day.

And then placing the masks.  It's amazing how many tiny mistakes crop up when you are making masks on your computer then placing them on the kit.  So, I had to make some changes, and cut more.  But here is what she looks like now:

Look at how that white paint reflects my bench lights.  What shows after painting will be weathered down a bit.

Thanks for looking!

Gaz, just catching up, this is definitely not a shake and bake and you doing a stellar job. As for the rivets, hmmmmm probably not for me……..

The rivets are expensive...   but not difficult.  Since I got a smashing deal for the kit, buying them didn't hurt so much.

Thank you, Peter!

I had a four-day weekend, and wanted to get some paint on.  I didn't have enough time to get as much painting done as I wanted.  Between laziness, family commitments, and and doing things to get the model ready for paint, I only managed to get the RLM 76 on.

I added some blue to keep it from looking like a late-war build.  I also used another shade to give it some body.  The masks came out OK, but will need a little touch up.

I had painted the spinner RLM70 and the blades RLM71 Friday.  I painted the scratched up fan blade a long time ago.

But back to work tomorrow.  Not sure I'll get much done in the next four days.

Cheers!

Isn't that always the way - just not enough time. Paint work does look mighty good on the wings, prop and hub.

Thank you, Peter.  There will be some hairspray chipping on this build.  So it’s gonna be a lengthy process.

Nice progress Gary, I always use a drop of something like tan in the white and maybe two drops of Nato black in the black to reduce the super harsh contrasts a bit. Works perfectly for me.

Nice Gary, what are the lighter spots on the wing Balkenkreuze, it dosen't seem to be a reflection?

Cheers Rob

Thanks, Rob.  Apparently on this machine, the 74/75 wasn't painted over in those areas.

Thank you, Peter.

For the few days, I haven't accomplished much.  Today I took on the danger-fraught task of exposing and highlighting the rivets by wet sanding.  In some places the sanding went perfectly.  Just showing tiny pinpricks of lighter color like on the underside of the cowling.

And on this wingtip.

They look brighter here than they do in person.

Unfortunately, despite clear coats and a few days time to solidify, the hairspray was reactivated during the wet sanding process, exposing more of the RLM 74 and 75.  Not sure whether I'll 'fix' it or not.

I don't really like the texture that using hairspray leaves behind.

The panel below looks nice and beat up.  I'm wishing I had taken some tie to make it look even worse by adding some dimples here and there.

Cowling ahead of the MG's also suffered from the hairspray problem.  Again...  not sure whether I'll rectify it, or blame it on poor quality Soviet paint.  The proletariat perhaps drank the solvents.

Because of the rivet decals I cannot just strip the model.  Otherwise I might be tempted.

A pinwash followed by some paintbrush chipping is next.

Been lazy lately.  Spending too much time in front of the TV.

Gaz, looking amazing to me, love the stressed look. I’d say that is pretty realistic and doesn’t need anymore but that’s IMHO. Are you watching the cricket may I enquire………

Thanks Phil.  Sorry, not watching the cricket.  I'm sure there will be replays on the TV at work all week.  Which will probably be better because they often skip the slow parts.

Aren’t « slow parts » the very essence of cricket ?
Enquiring minds want to know 🙄 ?

I like the result, mostly Gary. There are parts, where the wear seems a bit over pronounced. I had very good results, stippling color carefully with a brush onto those parts. Keeps the look of wear, but takes away the overly harsh contrasts.

Gaz

Weathering does look so good and sometimes the unplanned effects work out just fine as it does here. The sanding for highlighting the rivets worked perfectly.

No reason not to relax, watch tv and relax - there isn't a deadline to finish.  I actually started watching the Womans World Cup Soccer and learning as the game progressed. Nice for a USA win.

Can also skip the day and a half of rain this time as well! Old Trafford is a great old ground but boy the weather stinks at times.
