The noise is so distinctive, a friend of ours from New England perked up and said - "thats sounds like a Merlin" . He a good guy in our book !

That's a sound I'm also familiar with as one flies out of Waukegan airport

and is featured at the local airshow. When at Mom's house ,near the airport, I'll step

outside to confirm....and right every time! That and the Texans (At-6).

One time I heard a plane I didn't recognize.....it was a Ford Tri-motor!

As everyone has said the Merlin has such a distinctive, beautiful sound. Nothing else sounds quite like it.

Not enough windows broke and a Mi-24 didn't fall out of the sky when it passed.

I get the other Lancaster flying over our house on a regular basis. CWHM is a little over an hour from us so they fly regularly around the Golden Horseshoe.

When it comes to Merlin's, I've seen and heard maybe a 100 P-51's and nothing sounds as sweet and beautiful.

Last summer I had the BBMF Lancaster come over the garden at 200ft with me standing in the middle of it in awe and they weren’t hanging around…………

Agreed, even my wife agrees and recognises the sound of a Spitfire flying over.

Yesterday I heard the distinctive growl of a radial overhead.  Went and looked and all I could see was a yellow dot in the sky.  Nothing on Flightradar.  Being yellow, probably a Stearman or a Texan.  
We do have a guy that lives out here that flies a blue and yellow Stearman low and slow over the lake on occasion.  He also has a Gloster Meteor.
