I'm quite pleasantly surprised by how well the kit finish looks.  Is there any issues masking over it?

None, As a matter of fact, the finish is so smooth, painting over it, you get the same effect as painting over glossy black. the only issue is that when it was molded, the swirl marks in the plastic can show through the plating, like here on the gear doors.

Lovely internal work and like Gaz mentioned, those Ammo belts look the part. The pre painted Aluminium forces you to alter the painting process with the masking work to be done at an earlier stage, where normally overspray would not be an issue, but hey, no risk of paint lifting, I guess ;).

I have to say, the plating is aluminum, so the effect is incredible, it really looks like aluminum!

I might have to order some more Tamiya tape.

Try to find a roll of Dolphin tape if you can. I got mine from the paint store near my house. It's the same stuff as Tamiya tape but  about $5-6 for a roll that's the same size as regular masking tape.

I decided to do some testing of the Xtream Metals line of paints by AK, this stuff is awesome. The claims are mostly true, the only thing I found, polished Aluminum shade does need a primer underneath, or you need about 4-5 coats to cover and color variation underneath. The spare tail from my P-51 is below, the bottom right corner is the polished aluminum, underneath, I sanded down to bare plastic with 800 grit, it did cover, but took 4 coats, as this shade is fairly transparent, but overall, I am very impressed.

I tested about ten different tones now and am amazed with the results too. Most of the Colours spray extremely well with very fine grain. A few have a weak coverage, like copper and polished aluminum as you discovered too. I especially loved the bronze and brass, which I used on my Nautilus and the different shades of Aluminum.
I still have to test chrome with a gloss black undercoat.

Cheers Rob

That's great to hear about the Xtreme Metal paints as I bought some for my CF-104 build.

Thanks for letting us know about the need for a primer as I usually skip that part.

I always prime, at least large parts like fuselages and where PE or resin is involved, because I hate to see paint lifts after removing masks. I feel more safe with a solid base for painting and weathering.
For Extreme Metal paints I use Tamiya rattle can stuff, except for polished aluminum, where I follow the AK recommendation of high gloss black priming and would do the same for chrome.

I actually have to say that I am a convert, The finish is so spectacular, I want to do some more NMF aircraft soon. I have some gloss black primer I want to use too. I have a partially finished P-47 I may hit with these paint, and I also have a Ki-44 Tojo that I wanted to do in a polished finish. And now that I am thinking about it, I would love to do a high polish F-104 too.

I desperately need help! Does anyone have a set of side cab inlets for the Tamiya Mustang? I specifically need to ones with holes. Hopefully someone out there has built one with the block off plates. I would appreciate a spare set if you have them...

I have a set of PE vents for this kit if you want them. PM me your address and I'll get them on the way.

Thanks John! I was hoping to not have to spend $25-35 to replace a tiny part.
