  1. Ernie Fearless is only part of the equation - the other half, some absolutely brilliant modeling skills to pull off all the corrections. If we ever had a Mossie GB, I would be in with both feet with the Tamiya kit.
  2. Martin First and foremost, good luck with your eye surgery - nothing more important. I just had major oral surgery last Saturday and have been mostly sidelined from building as I can't wear my mask yet and that means no painting. I now have two projects underway but pretty much stuck in the mud - maybe today I'll be able to wear the mask without too much pain and carry on but for me, health issues these days are at the top of the list. Following your progress with all the corrections and work you have done so far, I tip my hat to you, some brilliant modification and correction work. After seeing what you have gone through up to this point, I'm so glad I bought and built the Tamiya Mossie when it first came out and if the erg ever rises again, I wouldn't hesitate on buying another one.
  3. Chris Some mighty fine work and your Voodoo looks fantastic. A tough kit to build and considering its age, terrific work. Nice choice on the finish - cammo. For me, it would have been a tossup between the SEA scheme and the earlier ADC all Gloss Gray. Just can't go wrong with either one and one of Mr Mac's great achievements. I
  4. Ernie Going to be a fun build to follow and enjoy.
  5. Mike All Mr Color paints and clears are very thick and require a lot of their thinner. I always thin and mix paints prior to adding the mix to the air brush as I was never convinced mixing in the AB cup is the best way to go, especially with thick paints. One of my most used air brushes is the Iwata Eclipse with a 0.35 nozzle, which I had for a good ten years and prior to it, I had another Iwata Eclipse. Just love the way they shoot and for the most part, they are bullet proof. My other go to AB's are both H&S CR Plus with a .2 and a .4 tip. When it comes to breakdown and cleaning, the H&S is so much easier to do and doesn't require and tools and every inch of the H&S AB's are easy to clean. I find on the Iwata Eclipse, actually cleaning out the passageway through the tiny opening into the barrel portion, very difficult to do and that may be where the clog is. One other area to check is the piston mechanism on the Iwata, which I had to replace just once, as the trigger would begin to stick. But for the amount of use I've given it over the years, an awesome piece of equipment. For gloss coats I use an Iwata Revolution with a .5 tip. As the tip size widens, I do need to increase the working pressure.
  6. Rob That's very interesting that you see no significant drop in PSI from the set pressure to the working pressure. In my case, the larger the tip, the gr I'll see a I'm only guessing but that may have to do with the sensitivity of the gauge, the range the gauge covers and then all the normal stuff we talk about so much: the air brush itself, length and width of the air hose itself. Everyone's setup is different and all that really counts, is the results and what works.
  7. John Looking good and so different. Going to be a standout among your other Corsairs.
  8. Oliver Good decision and unless you pointed it out, no one would ever know. I'm sure the weathering will bring all the colors back perfectly.
  9. Carl That's serious equipment and now I can understand exactly what you were saying and how lucky you were.👍
  10. Gus Nice work on getting the F-14 through priming - you're on a roll now.
  11. Carl Glad your run in with the cutter wasn't any worse then it was - it could have been a disaster.
  12. Rob Nice progress on the Arizona and as Mike said 'Now it's starting to look like a ship'. Fingers crossed Perfect Putty is the perfect filler - I haven't used it yet but I'm always looking for a better filler.
  13. Rob You certainly do know the right words to trigger my thoughts. I can fully appreciate your passion for vinyl and the technical knowledge, work and equipment needed to reproduce the sound you are after - I think that's simply fantastic. It's a combination of both new and old school and being able to enjoy the music on a system you created has to be so rewarding - the ultimate goal.
  14. Mike Once clears or paints are in the air brush cup, I hit the trigger once to make sure all is well and I'm off. Something doesn't sound right if you have to first clear the air brush or nothing is coming out. If this happens with just the clears, they are too thick for the air brush set up and working pressure. If it happens with the normal colors as well, there is a blockage in the air brush somewhere. After every painting session, I completely break down the air brushes used and thoroughly clean them. A good deal of the time I might also do this when changing paints from different manufactures and never alternate between acrylics with lacquers. Model Air is always used with its own dedicated air brush.
  15. Rob That's very interesting that you see a drop in PSI from the set pressure to the working pressure. In my case, the larger the tip, the greater the difference seems to be. I'm only guessing but that may have to do with the sensitivity of the gauge, the range the gauge covers and then all the normal stuff we talk about so much: the air brush itself, length, width of the air hose and then all the paint characteristics after thinning. Everyone's setup is different and all that really counts, is what works.
  16. Carl Amazing PE work - the details being added have nearly completely transformed the build to a whole new level
  17. Mike So your working pressure is between 18-22 which sounds fine but not sure why you turn down the working pressure when actually shooting. I also tend these days to use a .5 tip Iwata Revolution for clear gloss and flat coats rather then the customary .35 - just helps in applying more even coats. Of course, looking at the final results, they look perfect.🏆
  18. Mike Looking mighty good and the Eduard PE - holy cow - incredible. I have a nice three piece chisel set from Trumpeter for a number of years and agreed, they work wonders getting into those small places.
  19. Ernie Nice paint work for sure and the pic Mike posted shows the hard edges off to a tee. The brown is different shade and hue on the P-40, just depends on where you look. Yup, I had the same gap/seam and took a while to clean it up. I'm pretty sure the firewall has a lip on the outside face and that's a good part of the reason for the gap.
  20. John Terrific progress and you're already into paint. Nice work on the deteriorating fabric.
  21. Jeroen Looking so good and nothing like the Quinta detail sets.
  22. Oliver You surely have the knack - painting and weathering is off the charts! Looking simply fantastic
  23. Mike Awesome build - the extra details and the figures took your Wildcat over the top. Just beautiful work. Thank goodness you exercise a lot more self control then I did with the Whirlwind, taking a deep breath and came back another day to work out the repairs. I've finally learned my lesson and when frustrated or unhappy, there now is always tomorrow to figure out how to resolve it. My go to clear glosses are: Mr Color 46 and Tamiya Clear LP-9. Both I thin with Mr Color Self Leveling Thinner normally at 1 pt clear to 1.75 - 2 pts thinner. There is a lot of confusion when we discuss the PSI setting: is it the reading on the gauge just setting the psi or the working air pressure when shooting the paint? There is a huge difference. I normally use about 20 psi as my working pressure with a 3.5 tip. ,2 tip and I up the psi or the gun tends to clog.
