Bent wing bird- Tamiya F4U-1A

Id forgotten to paint the coaming so I did that next. Since I had to load black into my airbrush, I did some other parts at the same time, namely the engine pipes.

The seams were all cleaned up and then I sprayed everything in semi-gloss black.

I'm almost ready to close up the fuselage.

I attached the belts to the seat and then fitted that to the rear bulkhead.

I left the shoulder belts loose until I had the bulkhead joined to the front half. Then I draped them over the sides and glued them in place.

Excellent progess Peter. The pit looks really very nice! The way you draped the belts looks absolutely convincing. As if the pilot just left the pit...

So you nearly finished the challenge cockpit. Only the headrest missing!

What‘s next on the list? Engine or undercarriage?

Carl, are you going to leave the seat belts like that?? I sure hope so, instead of neatly folded on the seat ............. they look way more realistic like you have them as for a fighter, the guy driving has to get in and get going, no time to be unfolding neatly set set seat belts... they look really good like that much more real...

Thanks Kai! That was my plan with the belts. I even though of leaving them loose until the plane was finished and having them dropped over the fuselage sides.

Yup, they're staying the way the are. Especially since they're glued in place now.

Before I closed up the fuselage, I painted around the cockpit opening. This should help with the masking later on.

Then it was time to close her up.

Hey that’s what I call progress!

The put in the fuselage looks great! The fit is very good Carl, isn’t it? 

And also the Blue looks spot on. Which color from which supplier is this? 

When I build mine I had some problems with the exhaust-pipes some of which I had to lengthen because they were to short for connecting them to the cylinder heads. This could also have been a fault of mine during engine-assembly but would be seen clearly when the engine is exposed.

Do you have the same issue Carl?

Kai, I'm using Mr Color C365 Gross Sea Blue (well, that's what it says on the label:D). It's part of their WWII US Naval Color set. 

I have added a bit of Intermediate Blue to lighten it a bit as the actual plane was quite weathered.

With the fuselage all closed up, I decided to work on one of the mids made to the actual plane. Being a purpose built land based Corsair, the tailhook was omitted. Also the rear halves of the tail wheel doors was fixed shut. Although not mentioned in the instructions, Tamiya includes a recess on the closed doors to show where to cut them.

I made the cut and attached the doors in place along with the rear fairing.

Then I used thin sheet styrene to cover the remaining opening. Thankfully I found a pic of it in Dana Bell's book on the Corsair so knew what it looked like.

This was then riveted to finish it off.

Thanks folks! 

Just a small update today. I noticed that the wing spar was starting to bend at one end and was concerned that it would break. As a result, I decided to glue it to the lower wing section.

To further brace it, I started on the gear bay walls.

It seems to be ok and I'm no longer worried about it breaking now.

The last thing I got done was painting the rad inserts.

Hopefully I'll get more done in the next couple days.

Great progress and beautiful detail-painting.

I faced the same problems with the wingspar like you and did it exactly like you. The wing outer-halfs fit perfectly when the spar is assembled correct.

Peter,

I have a tip regarding the off-center topic:

When I have to drill a centered hole into e.g. MG or an exhaust-port, I use a needle and press it carefully into the center marked with a pencil to create a small hole that is used as a guide for the drill and keeps it in the center when drilling is started.

This method works quite well and avoids that the drill is moving out of the center when you start drilling.


All these holes I drill by hand and not with my Proxxon-Tool. But this is nothing new to you...

Maybe you can give it a try.

I never make judgments on paint color, as every manufacture seems to interpret the color chips and samples differently. MRP comes close and my personal choice as I’ve switched to It almost completely. If memory serves me correctly, Model Master comes the closest.

Jumping back to the engine, I've started on the painting. I did the cylinders in Extreme Metal aluminum.

I then masked them off to paint the crankcase. The pipes were done in semigloss black.

Time to start adding the ignition wires.

Looks absolutely convincing Carl. 
The color of the cylinders is spot on!

Not easy to paint the crankcase due to necessary masking. Well done!
