"The fastest piece of junk in the galaxy" aka the Millennium Falcon

Recommended Posts

There was a documentary about ILM and they talked about when they and other effects houses started using CGI how the model makers either learned to do digital effects or were let go. One by one all the shops that did physical models were gone and so was the industry.

What is interesting though is some of the managers have started doing things with miniatures again. They like having a physical model to reference and use and so some of them are getting back to their roots. Peter Jackson liked to use a combination of physical and CGI effects in his films.

That's sad in a way Carl just think about the movie"Titanic" that model ship was frigg'in huge like 25/30'?it fit the bill.I will agree it's a combination that needs to be referenced shoot I saw a 1/3 scale RC B-25 video look like the real deal.;)

25'  sounds about right for the Cameron Titanic model. It was only finished on once side so to film a pass down the other side, they would change some of the details so they were in mirror and then flip the image in post production.

There's an even bigger Titanic model that was made for Raise the Titanic. It's 50' ft long and is still in Malta.

If you're interested in movie special effects, there's a great magazine called Cinefex. It used to cover many of the visual effects used in various movies. I have some around somewhere.

Small update. Work has been really busy and way more physical than usual. So I'm wiped out most nights coming home. Plus I've trying to finish a side job I started before Christmas.

Anyways, I've been slowly adding the various piping and other small details to the hull.

It's started to get suitably cluttered.

I also tried some weathering on one section. I'm using a mix of Tamiya Panel liners in different colours to highlight the surface detail. Might be a bit subtle but it definitely shows up compared to the other sections.

Carl, an awesome build and the detail is phenomenal.  Very cool!  Really looking forward to the lighting.  Thanks for pointing out all of the interesting details - at Udvar Haze there is a model of the spaceship in Close Encounters of the Third Kind (if I remember correctly) and it has all sorts of similar things - a VW beetle, etc.  Fun stuff!

There's an R2-D2 in the model too. The mod makers loved sneaking thing like that in where viewers wouldn't notice them.

In one of the city scenes from Blade Runner, the Millennium Falcon shows up as a building.

Ok, I'm finely getting things done and closer to the finish line.

The engine panel was the last major sub-assembly to finish. There were a  bunch of detail bits to add, some going on top of others.

First up was the PE for the engine grilles. These go in from underneath and there's a blanking panel that will fit under them to prevent a see-through effect. I've left that off for now so it doesn't get any overspray on it.

With all six grills in place.

I then started adding the detail bits. These had been pre-shaded in black.

Finally a coat of paint to tie the bits together.

There's still one set of parts to go on but I need to apply some decals first as the parts fit over the decals.

Beauty, it's quite impressive how much detail they pushed into this kit. Chewbacca would be so proud :)

Martin, the crazy part is how fine some of the detail is. Some of it you don't noticed until you put the wash on it.

Like here for example.

I managed to get some more done. Mostly peeling the paint masks off.

Luke in the lower gunner's seat.

I then mounted the quad gun turret which means you won't see anything underneath it.

I started doing the panel line wash on the lower hull. It's mostly done now with just the mandibles left.

And flipped over, here's the topside.

It getting closer to the decal stage. All couple hundred of them.

Thanks Harv!

I've started the decals on the engine deck.

PXL_20230123_031806312.thumb.jpg.39b237ce4061a6e317d9725387c60222.jpg

I then added some around the upper turret. There's going to be some challenges to get them flat.

After a first coat of Tamiya Mark Fit Super Strong and some prodding and heat from an old hair dryer.

Your pile of hyperspace junk, called Falcon looks absolutely stunning, Carl. I love how you apply the fading and weathering effects, errr, wait, is there weather out there :D?
They could take your model and finally make a decent movie with it.

Cheers Rob

Thanks everyone! The paint work really has been a challenge which has now been replaced by decalling. And lots of it. 268 separate decals but some are duplicates that won't be used.

I got some done today after work. I have to do a few at a time as some go next to others and I don't want to mess one up while applying another.

Anything not in the base white is a decal. So many more to go.
