1to1scale
It’s a real possibility when politicians regulate and make decisions for us. As a parent I take responsibility for what content my son gets to view. COPPA has good intentions followed with bad legislation.

smitty44
I spend enough time watching myself model. And here I thought it would be because we promote everything plastic which is a very evil thing where I live. They will come for our kits one day.

Bomber_County
I watched Andy’s Hobby Headquarters take on this last night. Basically it will be the end of this genre on YouTube because it’s a 42,500 dollars per video fine. Google messed up and was fined now as usual are washing their hands of any future problems.
Wumm
It seems as if this problem could easily be solved by enforcing sites to administer Do Not Track software. Give the User the choice of whether or not to have their data harvested or not. Content likely to interest Minors casts a very wide net. Regulating this is going to be somewhat akin to attempting to keep a Goldfish alive in your cupped hand, while the water slowly drains between your fingers.
Jeff
and WHO decided the $42,500 was an appropriate amount??
[CAT]CplSlade
The end of modeling videos on YouTube is not the end of modeling videos. There is another Skywalker.
1to1scale
Well, it’s not the end of modeling videos...it’s the end of monetized and searchable videos. So what it means, if Andy makes a video of him building a Luftwaffle 107, then he can choose to label it as a children’s video, which means he will not be able to make any money from YouTube off that video because that video will not have tracking cookies, which means no advertising, because under COPPA laws, you cannot track children and target advertising to them. You will also not be able to search “Luftwaffle 107” and find his video. So, if he is not making any money, and people can’t find his build reviews and how-to’s, what’s the point of making them? The other side is, he can say that the Luftwaffle 107 kit has a label on it that says “not for children, this is not a toy, ages 14+”. He then monetizes the video, which allows for advertising, and tracking cookies. All is good, everyone is happy...end of story. Until a parent sees their child watching the video, and an ad for Viagra pops up (pun intended) and reports the video. Then some 24 year old Washington political science graduate named “Greta” reviews the video, she has no idea what model building is, determines, “hey, that looks like a toy to me!”. ”These evil old men are luring innocent children to their basement dungeons!” She then takes a look at Andy’s channel and finds 100’s more videos with advertising, catering to children! Oh my god! Time to fine old Andy $42,500 per video. Now he has a nice fine of $4,250,000, and a very least he will have to shell out $100K for a lawyer to try and fight this. All because he wanted to make a few hundred extra dollars per month, and promote his hobby shop. The way I see it, I can’t blame Andy for deciding to stop making videos. 3
Wumm
Andy (or anyone else in his position) doesn't need cookies enabled to make money from YouTube videos. Andy already has a tenth of the screen taken up by his Online Store's logo. If you follow his YouTube channel, you won't need to search for his videos. If you like his videos, you can already choose to support him without being sent ads targeted specifically at you by the carriage service. It's going to be a Law apparently. There are other Laws that people may not agree with, but have to abide by. Human beings are intelligent creatures and will work out ways to get around this. For instance, you can't drive at Highway speeds through the middle of Towns... Sounding the death knell to Online Modelling videos sounds to me like saying "Well, I can't speed through Town anymore, so I'll just quit driving altogether." Don't let the Gretas of the World win.
Jeff
Oh, please don't start me on 'Greta'............................................ BUT, I for one could certainly do WITHOUT all the advertising, we inundated with advertising, instead of going after guys like Andy, maybe the target should be the ADVERTISERS, most of that advertising crap I see , especially on TV is asinine, has obnoxious music that is way too loud, and is intelligence insulting to start with ............it goes on from there........... there is WAY too much of it, and this now 'targeted advertising' is where the LAW should be looking..... as far as I am concerned advertising is invasive to my personal space and time...... ok rant over, I'm off the box, now, ............................ NEXT !!!!

Administrators Clunkmeister Posted November 25, 2019 Administrators Share Posted November 25, 2019 I’ve never really watched model videos on YouTube until Nige’s stuff. His are interesting. But I’ve heard plenty of the stock complaints you also hear at model shows: “you guys glorify war machines”, “naziism”, or whatever -ism they can come up with, then follow it up by labeling us various forms of -ists and -phobes. I’ve long since tuned this stuff out. This hobby is getting way too political for me, and I’m about burned out on political crap, bureaucratic moronism, and do-gooder idiocy. This FTC crap is a prime example of bureaucratic moronism at its absolute best. Right up there with the FAA requiring R/C modelers to now hold a valid airman’s certificate and to register their models. (For a fee, of course). Idiots

Idiots I thought it was only over here that the idiots were taking over! We're also bringing in legislation, intended for drones, which will require all R/C modellers to register and sit a test. Anecdotally, people are leaving the hobby in droves. And eejits will still fly drones illegally near airports!
krow113
Its the way the world has become. Idiot instigators get off while their victims are villainized for their reaction. Strange stuff. Same as peeps around here that crowd the orcas in boats. Stupid IS the new cool.

Wumm
I just this morning received a YouTube suggestion on my phone this morning from Google, for a video review by Andy's Hobbies. I have only ever visited his YouTube channel the one time, last weekend to view the above content. I think this is the type of thing they're trying to limit through legislation.

Then GOOGLE should police themselves, and cut the crapola, with all the ridiculous advertising and targeting etc, etc, and let the governments GET ON with real important stuff..... IF big tech, didn't keep trying to target everyone for political gains, or financial or what ever the Hell they are doing, we would be a whole lot better off...... we survived thousands and thousands of years with out targeted advertising, why do we need it now......................... when I become King of the world, there may be a few changes... just sayin...

GrahamF@Iconicair
I'm not overly worried by this, I've found that model videos of my own products however good and complimentary of them they are actually increase sales by a factor of zero. I think there are armchair modellers and then there are youtube modellers who are just entertained by what they 'could' buy. The Internet is very fleeting in it's effect and I for one am now convinced that old fashioned print and face to face selling is the way to go as well as being able to sell via website if that's needed.
