Ha, I should have added "then disposed of' the lot, hence KFC stores here have been closing cos they can't get enough chicken.

Things just get sillier by the day here though. Now we hear that 800 people who were infected or possibly infected, were not at home when they should have been when people knocked on their door. 800 people, add to the fact that 80% of deaths have been in our nursing homes then we are told we can't go out more than once day and only allowed 1 hour of exercise. They can't even keep people in their house when they know the addresses, how do you hope to police this 1 hour exercise and 1 trip per day to the supermarket rule?

I'm sorry for ranting a bit but people had been calling for ages to police those in quarantine better,, but the sheet incompetence of our government would be funny, if not for the thousands of lives being upturned and wrecked because of them.

No problem, it's an issue up here as well...

On Saturday, they let some random fly into the State with the Virus. Apparently he was given Diplomatic immunity by the Feds, even though he was only a security guard working in Kabul, and flew into Sydney... New South Wales Health never checked his creds, or for the Virus, and just gave him a pass to leave. Queensland health also just took him at his word apparently, and when he arrived on the Sunshine Coast from Sydney he tested positive. Now they can't find two of the 14 other passengers on his flight, because they gave false contact details. Over 100,000 people have flown into Sydney from Melbourne in the past month since the second wave hit there, and no-one is checking them.

There is simply no cooperation between jurisdictions. Since the second round of lockdowns, Queensland has been trying to get New South Wales to move the inspection points south of the border, to alleviate the congestion being experienced there and to simplify the process for Residents who live either side and commute into the neighbouring State for work and business. New South Wales somehow see their own Citizens flooding north to escape the Winter like rats deserting a sinking ship as a Queensland problem, and refuse to budge even an inch.

They've had six months to work this out. To come up with policy, co-ordinate resources and organise contingency. Meanwhile, it still seems like the people in charge are always chasing their tails.

At my workplace, we're going mandatory masks tomorrow...  Thursday.  There will also be someone checking temperatures at a choke-point for incoming employees.  Also, .... and finally, thank goodness...,  toe-grabs on the lavatory doors.

Toe pulls they're called:

bathroom-door-toe-pull.jpg

I've been so sick for years of having to grab a door handle after washing my hands, and seeing some other shithead walk out the door without washing his hands.

They're increasing the fines down in Melbourne, too.

I have come to the conclusion that covid has become a general excuse for incompetence, lack of motivation to deliver. Product, service, you name it. Mediocracy has it's name.

I work in Aberdeen and we've just gone back into a local lockdown today due to an outbreak related to people breaking isolation and going to bars. Yahoo!

Cue a hectic afternoon at the hospital where I work trying to determine whether we're back to cancelling all non-urgent cancer patients etc. Crap I could have lived without!

We have a similar problem...

Many of our Employees are from a South Asian background (we're not allowed to use the Country of origin as a descriptor in the workplace, this is racist behaviour apparently). Many of them squat atop the toilet seat at work; as judged by the footprints left on the seats, and despite being repeatedly told not to do so. Getting them to wash their hands and even Social Distance is another problem altogether.

The keys for our work vehicles used to be kept in a locked cabinet in the Office. Management have decided that only Office staff are to be allowed into the office to prevent unnecessary contact (even though the Office staff are all able to work remotely from home). So at the start of the day, all of the keys for all of the vehicles are thrown into a tub that's put outside the Office door, and we have to fish through them all to get our own one out... like some twisted version of a 70's Swinger's party, and all the same chances of picking up something nasty into the bargain. Combine this with staff failing to distance properly, being required to use communal computer terminals, and being forced to take three complete strangers out in the truck as trainees in the last two months despite my protestations; and every day starts to become akin to 'The Pit and the Pendulum'.

I am currently at home with Covid symptoms, having now been tested for the second time on Saturday. I have a list of possible trace contacts to provide to authorities should I test positive. I have been fastidiously wearing gloves all day while working, and mask when required when delivering to the vulnerable. Despite being very careful, I realise that all it may have taken to catch this, is to walk into an Elevator that someone had sneezed in and just vacated. Or it could have been someone at work who was asymptomatic and was looking over my shoulder like they do when waiting for their turn on the computer. Time will tell.

Queensland has had no new cases in 15 days.  Now, we have two teens who sneaked in from Sydney and are being tested.  Hopefully they are clean.

Yes, unaccompanied Minors who somehow got onto a train in Sydney, got through Brisbane and then up to the Sunshine Coast without anyone thinking it was in any way suspicious, or their Parents wondering where their Children were. Luckily, when found and tested, they have come back as negative. So it seems like we may have dodged yet another bullet, although they will have to be returned by either Queensland Health or Police staff back to Sydney, and then those individuals will need to quarantine for a fortnight when they themselves return... All because of a couple of stupid teenagers.

Just in tonight, Auckland New Zealand has their first cases of community transmission in 4 months, 4 people from the same family... And no-one knows how they got it. Auckland has gone into an immediate3 day shutdown. A situation to watch closely.

For now...

Symptoms started late Friday night with a sore throat, morphed into a sore left ear and nasal congestion Saturday morning. It's now moved down to my chest, but my breathing is fine with it. Slightly fatigued when I walked the Dogs Tuesday afternoon, after finally being allowed out after 4 days. I would describe it as a mild 'Flu, but I'm not fit to lug 50kg boxes around all day so I'm having the week off. Usually I tend to push through mild illnesses like this, but not in this case.

I should be fine by Monday, to continue busting my hump and risking my health again for minimum wage!

And yet here I am, a fellow who has spent the whole summer in a 20x20 room with my TA and 10 students wearing a crap homemade mask because my work requires us to wear them, while the students refuse to follow social distancing guidelines and are constantly touching each other and trying to high five me and crap. My TA had a 100.4ºF temp a couple of weeks ago and was sent home but turned up negative. Three of my students tested positive and yet I have tested negative every time. This virus doesn't care what you do or where you are; you get it or you don't. All the tracking being done illustrates this; there is NO correlation between locking down or not locking down, and none between wearing masks or not. The vast majority of deaths are still among elderly patients with co-morbidities. This is all found on official sites such as the CDC itself, but the media is still pushing the alarmist scenario which is much worse than the medical community's own worst-case scenario. The death rate among confirmed cases is still less than 4%, and even less if you compare it to the overall global population. A bit over 62% of confirmed cases have already recovered and I suspect the 7 million remaining will recover for the most part as well.

Everything being done only slows it somewhat, but it is getting everywhere and will continue to do so, just like every other contagion. The shit can go airborne now; how do you think we can stop that considering we haven't stopped the others? In no scenario can you save everyone. I get no one wants themselves or loved ones in that 3.65% who die, but we can't keep the world locked down to save people who likely would have died in the next few years regardless to even a seasonal flu.

And health officials here in the U.S. admitted on camera that they have been marking every death as Covid if a test comes back positive, even if the actual cause of death was something else. So, if you are in the hospital dying of brain cancer and get exposed to Covid-19 and subsequently die, it was Covid what did you in.

******WARNING OVERDRAMATIC PANDEMIC COMMENT WARNING******

In an inanimate moment of overdramatic thinking , a thought progressed to the point of reasoning whether this could be a warning shot across the bows, with

The Real Pandemic yet to occur. With the future victims on display in hourly reports. . (with apologies to HST)

On a happier note I run a tourism based business literally at the end of the line. In the past month I've had peeps from ALL OVER THE WORLD  in my store. Less than 10% in masks. I run no shield , even though I've made a few for island business' , and dont wear a mask.

My best sales line?

" You guys dont hafta wear those masks unless your robbing the place"

I feel ok , I'll know quickly when something has invaded , it just occured to me the depth of my 'exposure' and I felt a slight chill.

A mortality rate of 2-4% is not to be sniffed at. These are victims that die alone, in hospital, away from loved ones, often having consumed a large amount of healthcare resource in attempts to save their lives. Some patients die quickly and some succumb after days and weeks of organ support.

Isolation, masks and quarantine etc are all an attempt to reduce the rate of rise of infections. No healthcare system in the world could manage the surge without a lockdown. The northern Italian health system almost collapsed, as did NY. In the UK we were very stretched and models suggest although lockdown was 7-10 days late, without it Surge one would have caused over 200,000 excess deaths, rather than 48000.

Its excess deaths you need to look at. It’s disingenuous to to dismiss the deaths with Covid results positive as somehow overestimating death rates. They don’t. There are less deaths from trauma and other causes. It’s foolish to think that many people who test for Covid would have died anyway from an existing disease. Those numbers are tiny.

If you had elective or emergency surgery during Covid surge there was a 25% Covid positive rate in those patients and mortality approached 50%. To imply those patients didn’t die of Covid and would have died from underlying disease is absurd.

I really do despair at the misreading of stats and epidemiology and the downright callousness and lack of compassion from many people, who assume it won’t affect them and make excuses that victims by implication are less worthy.

Since this seems directed at me without having the courage to come right and say so, I will point out you assume too much with the typical outcome of that approach. I can read stats; I can read graphs. I taught high school Statistics and use graphs all the time. I also understand medicine as I have several family members in that field. You are also off-base in assuming lack of compassion on my part simply because I accept the reality people die in these situations, or that I somehow think they are less worthy. Do you even look at the actual data published by the various American cities and their responses to Covid-19 or are you just following news reports (Why would you even do so as a non-American?)? It is quite clear, especially from New York City's own data, who is most affected by this disease and the result of it. You can choose to believe in this boogie man but the reality of what is happening does not match what the media says.

The victims die alone because of the hospital policies right now, which a growing number of doctors here are starting to question. You can't have a funeral or go to church here because you will spread the illness, but apparently it is fine to have huge funerals for deceased politicians and criminals or loot cities en masse. Explain why that is, if this pandemic is so deadly?

TBH Cat, I feel this is more a generalisation, and less a personal dig at you. From my interactions with Dave, if he has a problem with you he'll tell you straight up. Certainly lack of courage has never been an issue in my experience.

Most of the second wave here in Au has thankfully been confined to Melbourne. After the major BLM protest in that City, only 4 cases of Covid transmission were confirmed from this grouping of tens of thousands of people. Most of the attendees wore masks. Only two cases were confirmed from the slightly smaller Brisbane protest. Conversely, since June over a thousand Health Care workers in Melbourne have contracted Covid; although not from the workplace where people tend to be more diligent with their PPE, but in other interactions such as in bars and while socialising. With Sydney's much smaller second surge, almost half the cases can be traced to a single Restaurant, where it's far more likely that transmission was occurring due to unhygienic practices by the Kitchen and Bar staff, rather than being breathed or sneezed upon by random strangers.

The overwhelming vibe I get, from both fellow workers and complete strangers that I meet, is that this is all a beat-up. My Employers talk a big game, but think nothing of putting me in an enclosed truck cab for 6 to 8 hours with someone who may have the Virus and be either asymptomatic or otherwise not yet sick. People stand at their front doors with Children in tow and abuse me because I refuse to bring their items into their house and take them upstairs for them. In my experience, the general population are still refusing to take this seriously... Until it effects them or their Families that is.

Seriously?! You know better than the entire media? Are the media in on something, will you share that with us?

The "huge funerals for deceased politicians" - John Lewis's funeral had everybody masked up, with social distancing and massively reduced numbers attending, together with many of the attendees having regular covid tests. Looting cities "en masse" (what does that even mean?) is never right, covid or no covid. And you are seriously suggesting the pandemic cannot be "so deadly" because cities are being looted!? It looks like you ignore evidence you don't like, such as the 165,000 dead Americans, the 1,000+ extra deaths every day, the worldwide effect of the virus, virus hotspots traced back to churches and bars, and you ignore "the media's" consistent, science backed reporting, simply because it doesn't tie in with your opinions, as if "the media" have all agreed to hide the truth from the American people. Shame they didn't account for the person who knows better, who "understands medicine" because he has "several family members in that field" (medical knowledge by osmosis?!), who can "read stats and read graphs" and "taught high school statistics". All those epidemiologists, scientists, biologists, doctors, data modellers, surgeons and medical professionals have done this all wrong! They should have not bothered with years of study, backed up by decades of work experience, they should have just let some "family members" work "in the field", and their degrees, masters degrees and PhDs are no substitute for "I taught high schools statistics and use graphs all the time".

Please excuse my rudeness in deciding to follow the qualified, experienced medical professionals, the science backed media reports, the daily number of deaths reported, the innumerable doctors requesting people wear masks, etc. I know it pales into insignificance compared to your "I understand medicine as I have several family members in the field" (LOL!) and your "I taught high school statistics and use graphs all the time", but I'm a bit odd in following science, facts and expert over some unqualified person on a message board who knows better than them all.

Just my 2 cents worth.  We're now at over 3/4 of a million Covid 19 deaths.  Regarding the stats, people make all kinds of claims and counter claims.  For many, it seems that this "small percentage" doesn't matter" when 50,000,000 people died from Spanish Flu.

I'm guessing that many of these people are sharing their opinions because their businesses are failing, their stuck at home, or otherwise inconvenienced.  Call it self-interest.  No other name for it.  My father's 5th wife (yeah, I know all of the jokes) is always putting out shit on farcebook about fake stats and the small percentage not mattering.  I know she's happily sitting on 'Blessed Assurance'.  Both my wife and I have put her on 'hidden' a couple of times because we're so sick of reading the crap.

Governments are giving away a lot of money to stave off collapse.  Though I live in Australia, I've received a letter from Donald Trump saying that I'll be receiving a check for 1,200 dollars.  I don't know how I feel about cashing it, yet.  It's still in the mail.

I haven't missed a day of work or otherwise been troubled by the Covid mess other than having to queue up at a few places for groceries or hardware.  I haven't taken an opportunity to get ten thousand dollars from my superannuation fund, though many have fibbed about their economic straits.  I know one guy who bought a new motor for his boat with it.  I have trouble about lying on federal forms.  I know if I was jobless, faced with losing my home...  I would probably have a stronger opinion.

Personally I feel sorry for everyone adversely affected by the pandemic.  But I love to see what it's done for the environment.  We've fucked the environment, and now...  just maybe, it's fucking us back.

But I don't know how long that millions can stay out of work.  Some countries have already stated that they cannot survive further lockdown.

I've no idea what's next.  Hopefully a vaccine.
