You might like to try using glass microscope-slides. You'd need a very good quality glass cutter, a feather-light touch, and a good bucket of luck, as well as lot of practice, but that's the thinnest, most optically clear material you can find.

Jeroen, a quick question. How do you separate the masks if the detail is so fine and intricate . Especially the lettering, x- acto knife?

Most of it stays behind on the backing paper. All else is indeed removed with a needle

Drew up the JG1 unit badge for the left side of the engine cover and the mask for the yellow 6.

Mal Mayfield Is cutting the masks for me. As always.
