Soo.... What did you just get???

Just received this one, a very late PZ. IV. with Thoma Schürzen and winter clad crew from Miniart. The box is crammed full with parts and there is a lot to like about the kit. Workable tracks, extensive PE sheets, a one piece barrel and the crew. No need for extras on first sight.

I've never used either of these products, but I thought I'd give them a try.

Nice toes by the way Bill :D. I use the Flory washes since two years and really like them. I found Tamiya's panel liner to aggressive sometimes, especially with Future / Klear / Pledge. I liked the effect on my WWI builds a lot, where I used Aviattic decals, which have a hint of a woven structure.
Perfect Plastic Putty worked well for me in the last years too, it dries up fast and is good to sand.

I haven't built a helo since I was a kid...

I haven't used the Flory washes, but I had a tube of that putty. The putty worked out

OK the first time I used it but I found it had hardened in the tube even though it was sealed the next time I went to use it......don't know why.

From Tower Hobbies came yet another kit;

This one from Tamiya. It's their Russian Heavy Tank KV-1 1941 Early Production (35372)

Looks like a nice kit, and it's BIG! Yes, like their JSU-152  I got earlier, this was a large

beast of a tank. This is not Tamiya's ancient KV-1 model but a recent tooling featuring

Link & Length tracks and some very realistic surface texture on the metal plates.

Today items I ordered from Hobby Easy in Hong Kong arrived.

Two Tamiya products.

First their German Steyr type 1500A Kommandeurwagen  S.gl. Pkw Steyr type 1500A.

(35235). In 1/35. This version in not easy to find in 1/35 scale. It's an odd looking

vehicle, but I like it and it's a nice little kit.

I also got Tamiya's accessory kit for their 2 1/2 ton 6x6 U.S. cargo truck. (MM 231).

It includes a ring-type mount for the M2 machine gun, M2 machine gun, jerry can holders

with cans, ammunition boxes, side curtains, folded top, road signs, and even includes

a 1/35 scale puppy! Also a hard to find item......although Kitlinx claims to have one in stock.......or do they?. Anyway, like I said, a small order, but I've been looking for these

items to a while and I'm happy to have found them. Shipping at $ 15.00 U.S. was high, but total cost was cheap compared to sourcing them elsewhere. My 1/35 Steyr was

purchased for about 1/2 the cost of what the Tamiya 1/48 scale versions are sold on

U.S. websites. The Accessory set was about a third the cost of what I've seen elsewhere.

It seems to be impossible to get to building in the moment. There are so many distractions, I only managed to do some unworthy figure painting exercises. Hope that changes soon, because my fingers are itching and new stuff rolled in.

Umpteen times, I said to myself, can't do, won't do, shouldn't do, but I couldn't let my fingers off that spider web plane, if not only for the courage by CSM to release it. It will be build before my WNW FE.2b, but with simplified rigging, meaning complete web, but no turnbuckles.

I have the P-38G/H in stash, but this is my favorite version of the Lightning

IMG_0294.thumb.JPG.1e07b155fbe7454d3fcc65f5c6bb1ff4.JPG

Some new cutters have arrived too, on a bit more fragile, the other a bit more robust. The robust one is my go to sprue cutter, as I really dislike my DSPIAE cutter and don't like to use it anymore. My old Tamiya had a dent from steel rod cutting :wallbash:.

The brushes are to push me more into figure painting. It's a set of Da Vinci's Kolinsky Series 10. I bought some Kolinsky brushes from AK lately and found the quality very bad. First tests showed, these are good ones and definitely recommended to figure painters.

Last but not least a little scissor in tweezer style. It seems to be  sharp, but I have to see, how it performs. All the cutting tools are also bought, because I start with rigging of my wooden ship soon and you definitely need a reliable cutter for the threads.

Hi Rob

That's quite a bundle of awesome supplies and the Caudron is a build I am looking forward to as well.

You are going to love using the Da Vinci's Kolinsky Series 10 brushes - nothing paints like a true sable brush. I bought a set of three W&N Series 7 Russian Red Sable Kolinsky Brushes over 15 years ago, still use them all the time and they are as good as new. The trick, once or twice a month, I clean them with Master's Brush Cleaner and Preserver #101, as the sable bristles are cleaned and preserved. I paid over $45 for the brushes back then and the best brush investment I ever made.

Great set of items Rob! I have the Tamiya pointed cutters.....I like them, I prefer them to

my Trumpeter single blade cutter, which, although sharp, never cuts flush. It always leaves a wedge shaped nub on the part. Hate it! The tweezer handle scissors look like

A future purchase for me as the scissors I use currently for decals is a clumsy thing.

I've been using the Tamiya #123 Side Cutter for a few years now and it's awesome. I only use it to cut parts of the frets but if the plastic is too thick, I use a different cutter and then follow up with the Tamiya cutter. Just love Tamiya tools.

I reckon you’re stocking up for those long winter nights……..I thought the Dspiae. cutters were the dogs dangling bits…….

... as if there was nothing im my stash before, Phil :D. I bought the DSPIAE cutter, because I thought to upgrade from my trusty old Tamiya cutter (It's the same robust model on the right side of my pic above). I read lots of good stuff about the DSPIAE, but never liked it. The working process is different from other cutters, as there is a blunt side and a sharp blade. The result is, the cuts are more or less of the same quality as the Tamiya, but the blade tends to stick into the plastic, which is annoying, specially with fragile parts. I will test the new Tamiya 123 cutter (the left one on the pic), and hope it's worth the money.
I recently checked some cutting tools for rigging threads over on MSW and the DSPIAE was also inferior to the old Tamiya cutter in this discipline. Best was a Victorinox nail clipper :respect:.
Because cutters are so important for modelling, I will observe my old and new ones for a while and then will report about the good, the bad and the uglies.

I haven't tried the scissors in depth, but will do soon and report.

Thank you Peter, I used some sable brushes in the past, which were ok but not great. The greatest problem was to maintain a proper point. My last set is from AK (the ones with the red handle) and they disappoint (literally :D). I used soap brush for cleaning and used them carefully.
I thought about buying a set of W&N Series 7 but read, there are quality problems recently and that they have a leading middle hair, which is stiffer. As I have no HS options to buy quality brushes, I have to rely to the big A in this case. W&N was only available from a marketplace in UK, which often means, the good never arrives, but the money is always returned luckily.
The Da Vinci brushes look and feel superb and first tests tend to show top quality, with a good reliable tip and good color holding capacity. The bad thing, I can't blame the brushes anymore for my lame figure painting abilities.

Cheers Rob

Believe me, you are going to love the Tamiya cutters, as mine have been the best cutters I ever bought and I've bought a lot over the years.

The key in maintaining your brushes is cleaning them and using Master's Cleaning Paste a few times a month will both preserve your brushes and help them paint spectacularly.

Enjoy your goodies

More items this week:

First, another Tamiya kit; their U.S. Tank Destroyer M18 Hellcat (35376).

I've heard a lot of good things about this kit and it looks great. Very detailed!

It has link & length tracks, detailed suspension, and some very realistic rendering

of the fabric cover for the gun mantlet.  Looks like really nice kit.

I also got a couple of barrels from Aber:

1).  Russian 76,mm F-32 tank barrel for KV-1 early model 1941(35 L-43)  Tamiya

 2). German 105mm L/28 barrel with muzzle brake for LeFH 18M/2 & Wespe Sd.kfz.124

           for my Tamiya Wespe kit.

The M18 kit really is nice. I just ordered a Master  barrel for mine.
