And NOW 'Electric'  airplanes.............

I can't agree MORE, Rog................................

Given that a battery has only 20% of the energy capacity of the same weight of kerosene, and that, AFAIK, chasing unnecessary weight is still the ABOLUTE #1 rule in aircraft-design-dos-and-don'ts, the time when we see an all-electric passenger plane is still very very very very far in the future ...

THANK the Good Lord for that, Hubert......

"Get Woke ... Go Broke!"

This phrase has been becoming more and more true by the day. My fervent hope is the power of PC culture will be broken and we can get back to just being people again and not flip out over every least little thing.

So ... ever since I got my Ute ... I've been planning to get a hard lid (or hard tonneau cover) ... and yesterday the mission was completed :

A quick drive south to the Erksine / Falcon region ...

Thanks Jeff ... it does look a lot more "exec'" now ...

The colour (though supposed to be "colour matched" via the VIN number) may actually be a little off ... at least it looks that way under certain light conditions ... Not enough for me to be having rivet counter seizures though!! ... and it may just be the light position anyway?!?

Looks very nice Rog. Can't let my wife see it.

The road bike looks nice too. Is that a Dura Ace gruppo on it?

Carl

Thats from Malvern Star's brief attempt to break back into the top end market ...

Carbon frame, Mavic Cosmic Carbone 50 aero clinchers (about $2-2.5K worth at the time) and a full Dura-Ace groupset. Priced back in 2011 at $5500 AUD ... I picked it up brand new a couple of years later at $2900 ... annnnnnd it's been riden once!! ... the whole set up is way to aggressive for me to feel comfortable on the bike ... I ride my other two ... a Specialised Roll Sport with upgraded hydraulic disk brakes and a Specialised Diverge Comp (underneath the Malvern Star Oppy C7) ... with an upgraded crank to match the rest of the 105 groupset (I find the gravel set up and geometry to be much more suited to Australian conditions and my riding position ... I'm putting the Dura Ace bike Up for sale shortly.

Now I just have to organise the cargo area for secure transport

Nice bunch of bikes there Rog.

I've got a bunch of mountain bikes myself.  The main one is an Ibis Mojo HD. Full carbon frame and XT gruppo with Industry Nine wheels. I have one of the last Mantis Flying V hardtails ever made with full XTR but a friend who owns a bike shop says it worth too much on the collector market for me to ride it. The closest I have to a road bike these days is a one off Kona prototype cross bike. They made the one and decided to not go ahead with production. Bought the frame from them for $50 and built it up with leftover mountain bike parts. A real mash up of a bike.

And I agree, the bent over in the dropbars isn't for me anymore, especially with the way roads are these days.

I would love to have one of those, the closest we got was the impala SS, which is a Holden 4 door.

I envy the Kiwi and Aussie folks.

The Ute is a definite South Pacific development, and is sorely missed around here.

I’ll never get get rid of my 1997 Ford diesel F-250, but I sure can appreciate a sporty UTE.

The main reason I wanted one before they got too old was the loading height ... the tray gate at the back drops down to mid thigh level making it extremely easy to load/unload items without straining your back. The "Utes" sold here now are all imported Gernman/Japanese/Indian/Chinese designs for the American market with a higher ride height, twin cab, 4WD design ... RAM are selling the bigger (F250 sized) optionwzith their ad's trying to appeal to the Australian muscle car fans ... If I do trade out of this particular ute ... it will be to upgrade the package and maybe a newer model with low Km's.

For now ... I'm happy with what I have ... but I'll be looking to upgrade the intake/exhaust at the end of the year :D

I’m doing this up for my wife, to recreate her first truck.  I expect she’ll love it.  Either that, or kick me out.

This is odd ... I definitely remember the talk some years back of a possible export to the US under the El' Camino label ... That never happened??

Also ... I know that there is a mob over there that import Aussie utes and do a full R-to-L hand drive conversion for the new owners

Unfortunately, it has a big block Ford in it now. It should have a 272 Y-Block.  But I’ll remove the 460 and drop in a 302 (5.0) out of a late 80s Mustang for her. It’ll be reliable and have fuel injection, etc.

Other than that, it’ll stay fairly stock looking. No wild paint or crazy wheel/tire combos. Just a nice vintage looking reliable driver.

That huge hnk of iron over the front axle does it no favors whatsoever.  Imaine driving around with a thousand pound block of iron attached to your front bumper.

I tend to think theres a happy medium ... The guy who taught me mechanics back in the early 90's (when I was a full on rev head) had a saying: "Subtle is the way to go - the amount of hardware protruding from the bonnet is inversely promotional to the size of the male genitalia" ... also balance in the build ... power delivery needs to be balanced with proportionate changes to suspension and braking. My Charger was a speed animal ... and yet looked completely stock from the curb!! ... I don't want insane levels of performance for the ute ... hence the lack of engine mods ... just slightly better power delivery and better economy. The cold air induction system will still have the MAF Sensor to regulate engine tuning ... Also a nicer sound doesn't hurt. The header back exhaust sounds lovely on the demo's I've heard.

I’m the same way. Big bold bulges or scoops, etc, usually lead to nothing.

For decent, reliable, no nonsense compact power, you can’t beat a small block Ford. The 302 is extremely compact, and will look lost in that cavernous engine room. But they’re cheap, plentiful, and make decent power along with total reliability.

As far as sound goes, though, nothing, and I mean NOTHING compares to a healthy Y-Block Ford though a pair of glass packs. A pure 50s hot rod sound right out of Thunder Road.

On the plus side it DOES have a flashy new looking Edelbrock carburettor :D ... I had one on my Charger's 340ci small block ... but I agree ... a smaller cast iron or an alloy 5.0 would be lovely.

Nothing at all compares to the AFB Carter. Edelbrock did right by bringing them back.

True ... Andrew (my vehicular Jedi master) always said a Carter was to be used wherever possible ... although they were hard to get out here and expensive when available ... When Edelbrock started releasing gear here in the late 80's/early 90's, Andrew declared that the "copy" was sufficiently well built enough to replace the over complicated Holly messes we had to endure up until that point.

Working with Holly's always reminded me of one of the last scenes of Kellys Heroes ... When Oddball buys the Tiger off the Germans

Moriarty: Now look, Oddball. The trade for the uniforms I can understand. But to buy this tank, you got to be crazy!

Oddball: It's a mother beautiful tank!

Moriarty: It's a piece of junk. The fuel system leaks all over the place! It's a piece of junk!

Oddball: Always with the negative waves, Moriarty. Always with the negative waves!

Moriarty: Crap!
