I've been home for a couple weeks now after my triple bypass surgery. Last week I made it back to the bench but I've been finding it a bit of a struggle to stay focused. Part of that is I'm easily tired which is not what I expected. Everyone says it's normal after major surgery but I've no reference so it's kind of new to me. Which is a good thing I guess.

Anyways I started working on a resin Zero kit I have. I thought it wouldn't be too bad. The parts count was low and it seemed simple enough. I ran afoul of trying to do the chipping needed for the finish and having to use wire to peg the individual fingers.

Setting that aside, I started on a Hasegawa 1/32 Stuka G2. The problem I ran into there was I have too much AM and it was dragging me down. I started working on fitting bits but trying to make all these bits fit was too much. Maybe down the road...

So that led me to this kit.

There's a couple reasons for this choice.

1- It has almost no rigging

2- I don't have any AM for it so it'll be 100% OOB

3- It should go together (hopefully) without hiccups. Unless they're self induced.

4- It has almost no rigging

So here's the box contents.

I've painted and started assembling a number of cockpit bits. Painting around the brass fuel tank isn't 100% perfect but I'm happy with it. I know there will probably end up being some faults and possible corner cutting on this build but I'm fine with that. I just want to feel like I'm enjoying things and not getting bogged down. The interior is primarily NMF so I'm just using Matt aluminum for that. I haven't come across any wood that needs to be done so that's an added bonus.

Reduce to the max Carl ;), sometimes it's a good idea to step back a little from that overcomplicated and utterly challenging stuff and have a comfortable and relaxing build. The challenge here is in itself and in the end you will have a fine result and refreshed powers for the hard to build ones.
Your D1 is looking good and more than once I was tempted to buy one. It is an important, but often overlooked plane, being full metal and single winged, in some aspects even ahead of some 30's designs. It should be a single build but a great canvas for worn Aluminium effects.

Have fun with that little bird.

Thanks everyone! I'm just working on it when I feel up to it. Nothing forced or feeling that I have to work on the kit. I think that's been helping me out. 

Anyways, I've made a bit more progress on the build. I got the inner framework painted and together. First up was the firewall, control column and fuel tank

Then I painted up the side frames

These were then added in place.

I added the instrument panel and the IP decals at this point.

From here, I have the seat, belts and engine. Slowly but surely.

That's looking great Carl ! I have one also from Ern. So watching closely. Yes, getting tired easily after your little stay in the hospital is normal. Have to work you way back slowly....harv :popcorn:

Looking good! Glad to hear you are on the mend, model building should be perfect activity for recovering. As for the D1 it is one of the easiest WnW kits to do. I started working on mine last tuesday and I already finished painting it this morning. The fit and lack of rigging as you said made it a breeze to build. Ill be following your build...

Thanks Harv! Yeah, I'm still getting used to how easily I get tired. Had it brought home to me when I probably did too much walking on Tuesday and had to take it easy yesterday.

Nice work, and good to hear you are on the mend. 

I'm just finishing up my D1 build, first Wingnut kit i have built and i can see now why people rave about them. I've since added 2 more to the stash, with (i'm sure) more to come.

Sorry Carl, only just catching up. Great to see you back at the bench. Sounds like the D1 is a godsend. Nearly picked on e up at Telford but then remembered my work situation. This is going to be a beauty......

Love it, Carl!  

Nice to see you up and going.  This is the kit I use to convince people to just try a WNW kit.  Over the last two years, over 30 of these have slid through my fingers, yet I have yet to build one myself.

I’m one of those Big Project guys who really ought to step back and take a break. But, gotta finish the B-36 first.  :)

Ernie, it's a great gateway drug you've given out. :lol:

I did manage to build a Snipe before this but just having no pressure to throw AM at it and build what's in the box was the biggie for me. I haven't made much progress in the last few days but I'll be back to it tomorrow I'm sure. Today I had to talk my wife through how to change the winter tires on the car.  She did fine and our son even came out to help.

Thanks Dale! My blood pressure is way lower than it was when I had my heart attack. It was something like 180 over I forget but crazy high then. It's more or less normal thanks to the meds.

Thanks Jeff! I'm sure under a closer look there'll be stuff that wouldn't pass muster but I'm ok with that at the moment. Just glad to be accomplishing something.

We'll, it seems it was more than a day or so for my next update. I haven't worked too much on the Junkers lately but have made some progress. I finally got the pilot's seat done. I used the kit PE belts and they worked out ok.

I also worked on the engine a bit. They're probably not completely accurate but for some reason I wanted to do all the bolts in brass so I did.

We'll, I got the fuselage together.

I also put the landing gear legs together and temporarily stuck them into the fuselage to keep them aligned correctly.

I have a couple small seams along the bottom but they'll be gone with a quick pass of Mr Surfacer. 

Them it was time to add the wings. One at a time so I could get as tight a fit at the wing root as possible.

Then the other side once the first one was dry.

It's really starting to look like a plane now.

I've been plugging away at the Junkers. After checking the seams and doing a bit of filling and sanding, I sprayed on a base coat of Gunze Silver. I also painted the cowling panels prior to installing them.

On the marking profiles of the plane I'm doing, the drawings show a tonal variation that gives a bit of a tiger stripe finish to the wings. To achieve that, I masked off the wings one at a time and sprayed them with dark aluminum.

Here's the results on the first wing.

I then repeated the steps for the other wing.

It's reasonably subtle enough that I'm happy with it.
