Mike, with you, strip down AB add warm water and a tiny bit of Vallejo cleaner as a last shoot through and done. Never get any residue….and always use acrylics…….

Add MEK to Acetone ( 1 litre about $7) roughly 1:1 and you get Mr Colour Laquer Thinners $40 bucks saved 

 

So, quick question.  Did you pull the data sheet on Mr. Color for this info?  The reasons I ask is when I was a paint and bodyman in my past life, we had 4 different levels of lacquer thinner.  A low grade clean up/primer thinner and hot or fast, medium and cold or slow that you would select based on your desired drying time and weather temps.  Mr. Color is a slow dry that allows the paint to flow.  
I also pulled this off line:

Lacquer thinner may include a combination of the following solvents:

• toluene.
• xylene.
• methyl ethyl ketone.
• acetone.
• butyl acetate.

Now it obviously says “May” contain.  I’m just wondering which chemical speeds up or slows down drying times, or is it a ratio difference?

I have used Tamiya's lacquer thinner, hardware store, and Leveling thinner and honestly,

they all seem completely different....... So, what is lacquer thinner?. I use Tamiya lacquer

thinner with Testor's dullcote....it seems to work best with that stuff, the hardware stuff

for cleaning up, and leveling thinner for everything else. Great question, what is lacquer

thinner?

As I understand it in the UK ,commercial auto gunwash is low quality / some recycled content , and fast or slow is as much to do with inhibitors as anything else , we also have anti blooming for cold weather, but I am only an amateur painter in 1:1 scale and not a chemist. 

The recipe for MR Colour came from Arc Forums from memory ..or was it Breaking Bad ...?

My main "home brew" is the Tamiya X20-A Acrylic thinners as I mainly useTamiya Acrylics  

33% IPA / 66% H2O plus 5% flow retarder. Been using that at least 4 years now, rarely get dry tips anymore. 

 

I'm convinced as with 'sanding sticks "and other modelling stuff, there is an element of....... take regular items like chemicals, rebrand them and quadruple your profits . I doubt 20 chemical engineers sat down at Tamiya for 5 years to work out a secret formula for their Lacquer thinner, when that technology is over 100 years old .

Mr Color Levelling Thinner is way too expensive to use it to clean out the airbrush.  I use it to thin (not clean) Tamiya and Mr. Color paints - works great!  They don't call it bottled unicorn things for nothing!

Did not know that about using Tamiya lacquer thinner with Testor's dullcote - will need to try that.  I usually use Mr. Color products for clear coats through the airbrush (or their rattle cans), and Testor's if I need to hand brush a small detail.  Never thought I could airbrush Testor's, good to know!

Oh, you know it!   I just bought a quart of pre-thinned clear lacquer from the auto parts store for $35 and a dozen glass bottles off Amazon like the old MRP paints came in.  Also bought Mr. Paint flattening agent.  I’m going to sit down hopefully this week and experiment with ratios and bottle up some flat and semi-gloss clears and gloss in the bottles.  This quart can should last me a lifetime. 
 

Edit to add:  I bought soma MCW lacquers and recently used them.  I was having flashbacks from 40 years ago spraying lacquers in the bodyshop.  Each brand had its distinct fragrance from the big 3 paint companies back then.  DuPont, Sherwin-Williams and PPG. NAPA Auto parts had a line we used as well, might even have been this one, but the odor really took me back to my youth when it was all about when I caught the fumes.  Paint fumes, gas fumes working on cars and perfumes-chasing the girls.  
 

They say (who the hell is “they” anyway?) that the sense of smell is the strongest of all to give one a memory flashback.  I couldn’t agree more.  Just open up a new box of styrene or a tube of Testors cement and see where it takes you.  And they (there “they” are again) said sniffing glue was bad for you…
I was walking in to work from one of the lower parking lots about 25 years ago.  Along the pathway was a line of live oaks that lined the sidewalk.  I got a good strong whiff of the smell of the decaying oak leaves and acorns and and in my mind I instantly shot back to a day when I was probably 4 or 5 yo playing out in the yard and in the trunk of my grandparents old car under a huge oak tree. 
About 2 or 3 years ago I was somewhere and got a good whiff of a perfume a woman was wearing. Blam! Instant flashback to when I was around 20 yo driving my ‘65 Fairlane cruising the boulevard with a friends cousin I had a heavy crush on.  Now talk about chasing the fumes! I had completely forgotten about that girl in my life until someone almost 40 years later walks past wearing it again.

I think you misunderstood me. I don't use leveling thinner as a cleaner , I use it to thin my

Tamiya Acrylic paint. I never clean with it. Yes, I mix the Tester's Dullcote 50/50 with Tamiya lacquer thinner sometimes upping the thinner a bit . works well.

Looks great. I did notice the lamp is 6000K and the light color will be just a bit on the cooler side (slightly blueish), which should be just fine. Seems it's nearly impossible these days to actually find 5000K bulbs or LEDS anymore.  You can just never have enough light and wattage. 

Mark, when you have a chance, could you do a quick review as I need to add/replace one of my OTT lights for the bench and would want to try something a bit different.

 

 

 

For 56000k. Led and Tube Florescent bulbs  Try the Aquarium pet store.   They have them for Planted and reef Aquariums.   Also reptiles  !!!

I decided to jump on the Tamiya chemicals bandwagon and picked some up from my LHS. It was easy as they had a sale on. 

The lacquer thinner with retarder is Tamiya's version of Mr Color Levelling thinner, which has gone up in price by a third since last year. On a per 100ml price the Tamiya worked out cheaper so I went with that. 

The other purchase was a Gundam kit. Oddly, I don't have many of these in the stash even though I have a fair bit of mecha. To make it more interesting, this is in the Super Deformed ("Egg plane") style.

Nice decision to stock up on the Tamiya Thinners and cleaners. I never realized how much Mr Color Self leveling Thinner had gone up in price. going on buying. The Gundam kit looks pretty cool and would be a neat build to follow.

Some items arrived today:

First from Tower Hobbies; came some needed supplies.

1. Tamiya lacquer thinner.

2. Tamiya Lp-18 Dull Red lacquer paint...5 bottles. This looks close to red primer, I think,

     and I'll be using it on my Takom  Krupp Raumer. 

3. A bottle of Testors Dullcote.

Also arriving today from Sprue Brothers came a model from Miniart; their D8500 mod. 1938 German Agricultural Tractor in 1/24 scale. I've been waiting for this larger Lanz Bulldog . It looks like a really great kit.

Placed my largest Hannants order ever over a month ago and it finally arrived!  It was a little bit like Christmas, especially since I look at a few of the things I ordered, and I can't remember why I ordered them.  

First up are masks for the Tamiya Spitfire Mk VIII and an old P-51C that I started maybe four years ago, and the canopy is all that is left.  I THINK I can still find the canopy...

Also are the Quinta sets for a few builds: a 1/48 Spitfire, 1/48 Hobby Bossy Me 262 and a 1/48 Eduard Bf-109F.  Oh yeah, trying out the ASK masks on an Eduard P-51 (I have three possible candidates!).

Some Quickboost bits for the 1/32 Tamiya Spitfire Mk. VIII and resin barrels for the Tamiya P-38H.  I figure the nose is so noticeable I'd give these a try.  I could have gone brass...

More masks to help with camo and painting markings - the Mustangs are pretty simple, but I think the masks also help with the nose checkers.  Mustang camo is pretty much monochrome, not like the English and German aircraft.

I am bound and determined to build some SEA-Camo Vietnam F-4 Phantoms and this set is for a 1/32 Tamiya F-4 I bought at the first Nationals I attended.

Not sure if the Tamiya will be the first build, or the ZM 1/48 F-4 I have:

And last, but not least, the Spitfire camo.  It is for an IXc, but hoping it will work on the VIII as well.

I guess I will also be testing out a lot of different brands of masks!

Got a couple orders in today. First was from Resin2Detail. It was held hostage by UPS until I paid their brokerage fees. Then they lost the package and took them forever to find it and deliver it. 

UPS fees ($60 brokerage for $10 tax) are the biggest ripoff from any of the  courier services. Nothing against Resin2Detail but had I known they ship via UPS I would not have placed the order as I hate dealing with UPS. Fed Ex and Canada Post are 1/4 the cost for the same service. 

Anyways rant over, here's what I got:

Replacement seats for my HK Lanc as I've managed to lose one and break the other. Some seats and antenna for my HK B-17 kit. 

I also got a custom order from Evan Designs. This company makes LEDs in a variety of sizes and colours. So far their customer service has been outstanding. I emailed them with some questions I had and I got great replies and they even made a custom setup for my project. This will be for lighting my 1/20 VF-1S that I'm planning to start later this year.

The Spitfire camo masks should work on the VIII. The pattern is the same but the colours are different.
