GWH Hawk 81C AVG decals. 02/18/23

Yep, another GWH Traumahawk build.  I'm using Barracuda wheels and a few other Barracuda goodies, 3D printed seatbelts, and Eagle Editions decals.

This started as a hotel room build while I was marooned in Lewisville due to an ice storm making the roads impassable, and we'll get as much done while I'm still here.

My goal is to do a relatively painless build here, while carefully going slow and looking for the various pitfalls people have found regarding the wing/engine cowl/gun cover/fuselage join.  Hopefully if I find a problem, I can document it ahead of time to help others avoid the same pitfalls that snuck up on Peter and others.

Did all this in about 7 hours over two days.
So far, this kit has been a dream.
Everything fits beautifully as of now.
If the rest of this builds as big let, this will be better than even Tamiya.

FYI, I did ditch pretty much all of the extra crap in the rear fuselage, except for the big tank behind the seat. I expect that can be seen around the seat.

Price I also closed the avionics hatch, and lo and behold, IT fIT PERFECTLY!!!

I’m in awe of Ernie’s prescience. Here is a man that has the foresight to take a kit, tools, glue, paint, an airbrush and even a compressor in his car, just in case he is stuck in a motel for a few days, because of an ice-storm, and in …. Texas, to boot !  :unworthy: :unworthy: :unworthy:

C’mon Ernie, can you PM me the winning numbers of the next Loto draft 🙏 ?

Hubert, a admirer in need 😏

Nothing like panning ahead and being prepared. Super progress and some mighty fine work on the P-40's interior. I didn't have any issues with part fit at that point and after adding, painting, weathering all the details in the rear portion of the fuselage, just felt it was a shame to only have the little access door to peek through.

Did you know….

That airbrushing in a hotel room is considered rude?

So is it the noise or fumes they don’t like?
Noise?  Crank up a radio

Fumes?  Hi the local taco/burrito establishment.
Drowning out the offending factor is easy with something more offensive!

Nope. I’m just a jerk

You know, you could try blaming the excess vibration on a vibrating bed like they used to have...

Being a jerk would be if you used their towels for a deep clean on the airbrush.

I have a nice, quiet little auto start/stop compressor.  You can hardly hear it run.  Now, I am just this side of deaf, so, hey….

Really nice progress! But am I the only one who finds the image of your bare leg a little disturbing? 🦵 Using hobby knives while naked can be dangerous (please don't ask me how I know)...

Oh man, I never even noticed. Good thing I wasn’t excited or there would have really been a photobomb. 😎

Tell me all about it. I dropped a #11 in a handle one time and it landed straight in the top of my foot. Went in about 1/2 inch too.  After I pulled it out, the arterial squirt was impressive. My wife did some first aid, I got to the ER, and the doc made sure you tetanus was up to date.

For $180.00, this had BETTER be a good kit, and so far, it has delivered. Fit has been better than Tamiya with almost  snap tite precision.

BUT, as with most Chinese kits, the instructions let you down in a big way. Vague isometric views, some numbers incorrect, some parts missed altogether and suddenly they just “show” up as being installed.
I can see what Peter is talking about when it comes to the nose fit.
That wing-fillet-belly duct-cowl intersection looks like it could end up being a massive trainwreck if you’re not careful. A lot of stuff comes together right there at the firewall.

If this was done at the bench, it would be astounding. Even more so given that it's in a hotel room! I leave in a couple of weeks for a month in Florida; I don't think I'll have room to take a compressor. 🤔

Well, most of it is simply the kit. It’s a no brainer through now.

Terrific progress and I have to disagree - fit is good in most places but not all. But being a huge Tamiya fan boy and having built the P-40, way too much wasted details and not the equal of any of the new Tamiya kits for part fit and location. Part fit is sloppy in certain areas and even with GWH adding a correction sheet, they missed parts that needed to be relabeled/re-numbered. Unsure part location/orientation in the instructions surely didn't help. One area they do pull ahead of Tamiya is the quality of the decals but the decals have a few errors.
