Silver Wings Hawker Hart

Something out of my comfort zone but it seemed like the right time to build it.  As mentioned previously, this came about through an effort by Here Clunk to get me to try building a biplane.

The kit is all resin with the struts reinforced with metal rods. The fuselage even has alignment pegs moulded onto it.

Like seemingly all Hawker aircraft (I haven't checked the Hunter), there's a tubular frame to the cockpit.

My copy had a couple breaks in it along with some resin flash. Rather than try to clean things up and fix the breaks, I decided to give making a replacement from styrene rod a try.

Sooo,....you throw away the kit and scratchbuild a new one?:ph34r:

I always liked the Hawker biplanes. They used to be quite rare but after they found more than a

dozen wrecks in a scrapyard in Afghanistan the population is healthy.

I find working with resin much easier than working with most manufacturers styrene. I prefer a soft medium, and for the most part, resin delivers. Kitty Hawk and ICM styrene is nice as well. 

Im looking forward to see how this one shapes up.

LOL, no. That would be too much work and way above my pay grade. 

It just looked easier to do a new frame for the cockpit than try to build from the resin ones. At least to me. 

If it doesn't work, I still have the resin one as a back up.

Well, having been on a hiatus from plane kits this is what I dragged out. Sort of like jumping out of the frying pan into the deep end filled with burning napalm while carrying a 500lb bomb. 

I took a look at the framing I'd started in plastic and decided to see if the resin kit one was usable. After using CA to glue the breaks, I cut them loose from the pour stubs and they held together.  So next up was some assembly.

I still have to use the plastic rod for the cross braces though. Just felt it would be a bit sturdier that way.  One thing led to another and here's where I am as of tonight.

I figure the cockpit for the scariest part of this build so I may just continue on with it. 

So much for an easy build to ease back in.

Cool to see this one on your bench ! As per my habit, I have searched, and found, a civvie livery for mine. And there are even decals/masks for it :) !

Looking good so far. These Silverwings kit are are truly a joy to behold and build. I had a ball with the Sea Gladiator earlier this year and would love to have the Demon as well as the Hart. I have a thing for between the wars aircraft, US as well as British.

Keep on trucking and giving us updates. Great to see the progress.

Thanks guys for all the encouragement an interest. 

Bit of progress, I painted the frame and started on the smaller bits.

Just taking my time with it. Colour wise, there isn't a guide in the instructions so I'm going by what the Hurricane interior was like. Hope it's more or less close.

This is my second full resin 1/32 build. The first was the XF5-U Flying Pancake. Except for the weak landing gear, that went together ok.

Got some work on the Hart done. The cockpit was finished off which meant I could finally close up the fuselage.

One nice thing about using CA, is I can start on the seam filling right away. The upper fuselage seam was fairly clean but the lover fuselage has an odd trough where the halves meet. Ive been filling it in with thin coats of CA and it's working well enough.
