BradG
Our partner club is a baseball club; we use the ground and facilities in Summer, they in Winter. I can and do, plonk infront of the TV for all 5 days of a test match and watch every minute of it. Best ever was the 1999 World Cup in England, where we drew the semi final and then spanked Pakistan, I watched the whole thing live and just lived with no sleep at school for several weeks. I actually remember sleeping at lunch times lol. That's also the world cup that gave rise to the famous spray by Steve Waugh; "you just dropped the world cup".

Things are beginning to get a little ridiculous down here. A Brisbane man attempted to make the two hour trip into New South Wales on Sunday with a fake return pass, and got caught out. The rules dictate that if you don't have a valid pass, you can only fly back into Queensland and not drive in. So now he must leave his car in NSW at an Airport somewhere, fly back to Brisbane, and pay for his own accommodation in quarantine for two weeks. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-09-07/fishing-rod-trip-costs-man-6800-dollars-in-border-crackdown/12635836 This would all have been avoided if there were reciprocal arrangements for travellers trying to leave the State, rather than only attempting to enter. But that would make too much sense. S

The Powers-that-be allowed thousands to march in BLM protests under the same stage 3 restrictions earlier in the year. People see events like this allowed to proceed and become emboldened, especially as there are no current Covid cases in her City. The response was a little draconian for my liking... BradG
Police have really gone mad with power. Mums friend up the road was harassed by the police driving by for standing on her porch yelling/talking to the neighbour over the road. There have also been a case of police threatening to shoot a person who was outside putting his bin out after curfew. One of the head cops held a press conference that called anyone who opposes these lock down laws as "batshit crazy"...gee I'm sorry if I like freedom! It's also very troubling that our curfew, from 8pm to 5am, was not put in place because of medical advice, it was put in place because police suggested it would make things easier for them. This is scary, a curfew is a serious curtailing of people's rights and should only be imposed on people for VERY good reasons, not because it might make the police's job easier.
rkranias
That's me after about 2 months of near lockdown with two teenagers. We believe COVID19 hit our house in early Feb. Me, wife and both kids (13/15) at the same time. High fever, coughing all night long and very weak for 10 days. It was hard on all of us. Kids and most importantly our teachers adapted to virtual classroom. It was not perfect but it got the job done. Kudos to our kids' teachers. This fall our school district got technology sorted and the virtual teaching model is transparent, kids have accountability and teachers doing a terrific job. Hardest was watching our kid's sports vanish. Soccer, field hockey, ice hockey, swim team, tennis and riding came to a screeching halt. They missed their friends. We load of our kids with summer camps (mostly day camps with a few sleep over camps): riding, hockey, science, counseling training, volunteering...all cancelled. Wife's job turned from partial home based to completely home based and virtual. Zoom meetings replaced conference calls. My volunteer work at NASM Udvar Hazy is on hold until further notice. Our local IPMS (NOVA IPMS) has been conducting virtual monthly meetings via Zoom is working well and keeping us connected. I was on a roll with COVID bench time early on. However, lots of home projects and keeping active with kids has made bench time somewhat diminished. We live close to the beltway near Washington DC I-495 and we always hear the steady hum of traffic, especially in the evening. It was dead silent for 3 weeks. Incredible. Our neighborhood actually got a little closer as many families/couples/elderly would walk the streets. Wife and I would sit in our front yard for our own "happy hour" and engage with neighbors walking by. We live about 1/4 mile from Rock Creek Park. The Park Service closed a portion of the road in Rock Creek on weekends allowing pedestrian, bike, roller skate only. A positive outcome of COVID is people getting out and exercising. I count my blessings our elderly relatives are ok and other family members have been spared COVID19. Also count my blessings income not compromised.

Wumm
It's a horrible feeling isn't it Phil... My Wife's employer laid off their Casuals earlier in the year, went to half staff for 2 months with those not working on enforced furlough, and then announced in June that there would be more redundancies. That date came and passed in late July, but the notice still sits on the door of our 'fridge as a constant reminder. The 'tap on the shoulder' can still come at any time... An A4 substitute for the Sword of Damacles. Meanwhile, a 46 year-old man was killed by a Shark while surfing on the Gold Coast on Tuesday. Gold Coast beaches were closed Wednesday as they searched for the culprit, however hundreds of desperates still went out on their boards yesterday... No-one was arrested. Three Shark attack deaths in Queensland so far this year, compared to six from Covid 19. If you're under 50 here, you are more likely to be eaten by a sea creature than to die from complications of Corona Virus. Just for comparison. BradG
Out here we're now finding that the estimates on deaths and how many hospital beds would be needed was in error by a huge percent. So they punched all this data into the computer modelling and got information out the other end that was 300% in error. Our governments then used this crap to impose draconian restrictions on us. More cases of the gestapo, I mean Victoria Police harassing people sitting on benches, one woman 38 weeks pregnant was asked why she was in the park. Clearly she was out walking, but needed to sit down for a moment, but the police kept dodging the question on if she was allowed to rest for a minute while out walking. We are wrecking Australia and destroying our civil rights for nothing. It's actually very scary, especially to see people cheering on these things. In fact, I'm under the threat of being banned from one website if I criticise police, because some of the admin and friends of admin are in emergency services. Mind you, not break any rules, just post genuine concerns about law enforcement's behaviour.

It's starting to get a little bit like that here in British Columbia, Brad, and I don't care for it one iota.... soon we will have to stand up to all this silliness..... I am 'cautiously optimistic' that we will hopefully get back to some sort of normal soon..... I'm just not keen on wearing a mask all the time, everywhere we go from now till eternity..... I hope that doesn't happen.... things were falling apart here a little bit due to some folks wanting to summer party, and they are now talking the possibility of reverting back to the March restrictions, could easily be a reality....................... huh
krow113
The local indigenous reserve is closed due to a case showing up there. Town business' are reputed to be refusing service to indigenous band members... My tongue in cheek "predictions" posted on this thread in March creep ever closer... Civil unrest is reaching the boiling point , muted until the last second , as people turn against each other , silently waiting for their tun to pass judgement on one another. I cant even , or want to imagine what its like in the urban areas. Literally 100 yards past the end of the road, I'm in a safe place.

And therein lies the rub... Drastic measures to save the NHS appear to have worked. However, I think that many fail to appreciate that you cannot finesse your approach to this Virus. As Victoria has shown, once the Virus gets out into the community, it takes months to regain any semblance of control. Using low death numbers to call for relaxation of restrictions is disingenuous at best, and downright irresponsible at it's worst. Cases are beginning to rise again in Blighty... And Winter is coming. The Queensland Government continues to adhere to strict border controls despite mounting pressure from the mainstream Media; and gatherings have been limited to 10 in a household, as there have been a few isolated cases out here in the Western Suburbs of Brisbane. Total Covid tests passed the one million mark during the week; for a total of 1,145 confirmed Covid cases, and 6 deaths. S

GazzaS
Although I'm certainly over all of the troubles... I certainly don't want anyone in my family catching it. My wife, daughter, and now grand daughter are not paragons of healthy vitality. Even at 54 and overweight, I'm the healthiest of our little clan. I'm not bothered by masks or confinement. I'll take having a family any day.

BradG
One thing that seems to be eroding fast are our rights here. Now the government is trying (and probably will) pass a law that allows police, or anyone who is designated a Justice of the Peace, to arrest and confine a person indefinitely without charge and only on the suspicion they may break a law. Scary, scary stuff here in Melbourne. Imagine how that could be abused. Just think, an untrained person could be allowed to detain someone with no evidence of wrongdoing, without appeal and without question for as long as they want on a suspicion. Australia doesn't need to be invaded by China, we're going to turn into a Communist dictatorship by ourselves!
