A Sexy Spitfire

Recommended Posts

An opportunity has presented itself that I just can't turn down.  I was able to get a Tamiya Spitfire at a great price from HobbyNut models.  I wasn't going to build it right away as I had the Thud ongoing, but Mark at HobbyNut asked me to give the new Quinta Studios 3D decals a try.  So l, I have paused the Thud and have pulled out the Spit to get it built up.  Along with the Quinta goodies I am trying out the new decals from Exito decals.  A huge thank you to Hobbynut models for their help in making this build possible!

My build will be a clipped wing Spitfire Mk.IXe of 318 Sqn.  The Exito decals look lovely and the full size thick glossy paper with beautiful color schemes is an excellent touch.  It's worth displaying with the model except mine had a bit of water damage from the ridiculous weather here in Texas.  Thankfully the decals themselves seemed to have made it ok.

Nice subject there Tony. There's not a lot of Spitfires with nose art so it's always great to see one.

The Exito placement sheet looks really good too. Like you said it's unfortunate it got a bit damaged or it would be great to display with the build.

The Quinta Studio goodies are a sight to behold.   The instrument panels are absolutely beautiful with built in instrument clear glazing that really looks the part.  The depth of the instruments is far more realistic than the deep set ones that come with the kit.  I'll be back from work in another week then I'll get to work on this beauty.

This will be an interesting topic to follow.
especially regarding the Quinta-3D-Decals and your experiences I also have these and some RedFox in my stash.

Have never seen a Spit with such beautiful (in the real sense of the word) nose art.

Keep ‚em coming!

Looking forward to this one!  Great Spitfires and the art work is nice as well...

Those Quinta 3D decals look fantastic.  Are they applied as decals, or are they glued on?

They have to be handled like Decals, Mike.

No, you use water to separate them from the paper, you need to use either PVA or CA glue to adhere them. Just like PE, but faster. The decal sheet solves an problem in 3D printing that how do you print, remove them, and not lose tiny pieces. Placing them in water, slide them off to a paper towel, the decal glue does not adhere very well, while it possible to attach them, they will probably not stay on. Some kind of adhesive is needed, I personally tried both PVA and CA, I prefer the CA (slow set) because dropping time is much faster.

keep in mind, this cockpit is the width of one thumb.

Thanks for the explanations! Very helpful!

Is this Quinta or RefFox? Looks awesome! Scale is 48? Is this a Mirage-Cockpit?

I'm hoping to maybe be home for a few days to get some work done on the cockpit.   We're headed into March Madness here so who knows what my schedule holds for me.  I do know on my hard days off I'll be digging into this bird.
